Surfing the Ham Channel #3

Tonight, Surfing the Ham Channel presents a very special installment...

Feel the burn as we Warm Up with Traci Lords

"Don't jerk it hard, keep it smooth."  - Traci

"Be sure to catch this evening of euphoric jazzthetics, as Traci Lords turns up the heat in a pastel living room. After a few minutes of slinky stretches, Traci pulls out all the stops and it's time to get hot! Prepare to be inspired by her rapping rhymes as the synth horns honk along to her bouncing muscles. Just when you think you're spent, Traci finishes you off with a goodnight stretch accompanied by a chill slap-bass tune."

Stay tuned for!
- Traci's facial expressions around 28:30 shows just how silly she realizes this is.
- I question Wally's commitment. He seems to really slack sometimes.
- Change!
- If you don't have the physical stamina to do the whole routine, just skip around to hear those wacky rhymes. "Set your own pace, we don't want no lawsuit case!"

That concludes the impromptu Traci Lords Appreciation month here at EHC.
She survived a troubled past of abuse and drugs to become a successful icon in B movies, and for that we salute you!
Cry-Baby, 1990

Skinner (1993)

"It's good to be happy."  - Dennis

A serial killer moves to a new city, followed by a mysterious woman who knows his secrets.
Starring: Ted Raimi, Traci Lords, Ricki Lake

Link to IMDB

Dennis Skinner is a new drifter in town, looking for a place to call home, and he finds a spare room at the house of the naive Kerry. Dennis has a secret hobby though, which is killing people and then wearing their skin! He's very insane, and I really mean seriously bat-shit insane!
Following Dennis into town is the crippled Heidi. She's the one victim that survived and has been tracking him for years, looking to get her revenge.
Dennis can appear (mostly) normal, so he gets a job and makes friends with Kerry. But will he lose control of his murderous hobby, or will the vengeful Heidi destroy him first?
That's pretty much the entire premise, but this movie is more than skin deep. (ugh, I had to.)

There's actually not too much gore and violence, but it's still definitely not for the faint of heart. The blood we see is nothing compared to just how inherently creepy it feels watching Dennis wear the skins of his victims.
The entire cast does a good job, but it's Ted Raimi that steals the show. He plays a psycho in such a disturbingly irregular way. It's almost like no one told him this was not a comedy, and yet it's effective as we see his madness spill out of him. He does some truly disturbing stuff and it gets macabre at times, but it's also rather funny.

Traci Lords' role is unlike anything else she's done. She's almost unrecognizable as the wounded Heidi, and really embraces the weirdness of the role. Well, everything in the movie embraces weirdness!

Instead of just being a slasher movie, it feels more like a dark fairytale. Everything is eccentric and surreal. The undertones explore the themes of what makes a victim, what makes a monster, and how our past cannot be hidden behind a mask. (And it explores weirdness, don't forget the weirdness!)
A unique movie that defies categorization.

Be sure not to miss:
- Water imagery is used throughout. Dennis admires it for its freedom, and yet he devours it like a savage beast. He and Heidi both appear calm on the surface, but boil within. Water is also a mirror.
- The dog died from eating that!

Internet review:
"Skinner really just has to be seen to be believed." - McKibben

Should I watch it?
Enjoyable as something demented and outrageous, but it's not going to brighten up your day.

Laser Moon (1993)

"You know, this movie really sucks."  - Barbara

A radio DJ helps two police detectives hunt down a serial killer that uses a laser.
Starring: Traci Lords, Harrison Le Duke, Bruce Carter, Bob the cat

Link to IMDB

Laser mooning intensifies
A man on an isolated fishing boat pulls out a cassette player and starts listening to a recorded voice which serves as our introduction to the plot. This man is actually a part of the story he's listening to (he is the Detective,) so the tapes are explaining past events as shown to us through the movie. Halfway through, we even see him flip the tape over. Talk about realism!
Zane Wolf is the voice on the recording, and also the main character of the story. He's a sardonic DJ of a late night radio talk show where no topics are taboo.
The city is being terrorized by a masked man killing women with a laser pointer... He just points it against their head and they die. He prefers doing this during a full moon, and that's how the movie gets its amazing title.

The movie crawls along at a snail's pace, with boring radio talk and pointless scenes of people listening to the radio. Oh wait, there's Traci Lords, um, doing house chores. And next we see a guy peeling a boiled egg for five minutes... These characters are important later, but at first we are all just resigned to listen to Zane's weird show and philosophical narrative. Luckily, much of his dialog is pretty easy to laugh at.
After 30 minutes, a specialist named Barbara is brought in to help the Detective catch the killer, and the story picks ups a bit. As expected, Zane starts getting calls from the killer, and he's going to have to work with the police if they want to stop the laser moon killing spree.

"Paper or plastic? Plastic or paper? I just don't know anymore." - Zane

Despite being incredibly slow and bogged down with Zane's marriage problems, the movie is put together in such a bizarre fashion that it kept me interested. Many scenes are utterly pointless but the filmmakers must have thought that by seeing enough of them strung together you would be tricked into thinking you're watching a real movie. This tactic always fascinates me, so I was almost starting to enjoy what was happening. It aims to be a noir-style thriller, but is too sloppy to remain intelligible.

Be sure not to miss:
- Why did the Detective always need the bathroom? Was that comedy?
- So much saxophone!
- The movie is dedicated to Bob the Cat, who appears in a few scenes.

Internet review:
"It's almost like the makers of Laser Moon had never actually seen a movie before." - Ty

Should I watch it?
It's bad, but the slow pacing is the real problem. Kind-of worth seeing. Maybe?

After a few refreshes and some buffering, this video eventually does work fine.

Not of This Earth (1988)

"I will be dining... [dun dun dunnnn] ...out."  - Mr. Johnson

An alien vampire comes to Earth to test our blood, and hires a young nurse to help him survive.
Starring: Traci Lords, Arthur Roberts, Lenny Juliano

Link to IMDB

A sharp dressed alien named "Mr. Johnson" has come to Earth to conduct research on human blood. Although he has no problems killing people for it, his first stop is at a clinic where he's hoping to be supplied with free blood transfusions. With the help of some mind control powers, he gets the doctor's cooperation and hires nurse Nadine to be his personal assistant at his house.
We soon learn what Mr. Johnson's plan is when he makes a call to his home world. He has come to Earth to find healthy blood that is vital to the survival of his race. Everyone on his planet is dying after the ravages of a war, and they are in need of a fresh supply. If our blood proves to be top quality they will enslave humankind.

Mr. Johnson has also hired a butler, the smart-ass Jeremy. He unknowingly helps his boss find victims to feed on, usually in the form of raunchy prostitutes. Nadine is dating one of the local police officers, and as the body count rises he starts to suspect that they have a serial killer in town. Jeremy and Nadine begin having realizations of their own, as they see more of Mr. Johnson's strange behaviour.

"I don't get paid to think, but I've started doing a lot in my own spare time." - Jeremy

A few sections are a bit slow, but it helps create suspense of what Mr. Johnson is capable of doing next. It gets more energetic in the later half, especially when a female alien also arrives.

The sci-fi elements of the plot are played seriously, and it almost feels like a classic Twilight Zone episode (there's even a reference to the show) except that we have a sexy layer of cheese on top of everything to keep it gleefully trashy. There are some good laughs, but not by accident. The movie is fully aware that it's a cheap thrill, and at the same time it restrains itself from flying off the rails into ridiculousness. I found the balance of story and laughs to be quite effective.

J Mascis, is that you ?
Be sure not to miss:
- There's a totally insane montage of aliens and explosions during the opening credits, which has absolutely nothing to do with the film itself. They are clips from other Roger Corman productions.
- It's brief, but Traci's nudity here is the only time she did it in her acting career. She's pretty awesome in this movie, and this was her first real role!

Internet review:
"This film has enough cool in it to make it one of the decade's better sci-fi flicks." - funkyfry

Voyage of the Rock Aliens (1984)

"Life forms, yes. Intelligent, no."  - 1359

A musical about aliens looking for the source of rock & roll, but all they find is trouble with the hip teens on Earth.
Starring: Pia Zadora, Craig Sheffer, Tom Nolan, Ruth Gordon

Link to IMDB

A space robot is scanning the universe for new music to listen to, and after a few dull planets he finds one that looks promising and zooms in to investigate. We see two rival motorcycle gangs getting ready for a fight as they sing an electro New Wave ballad. The music is rad, the cinematography is good and the costumes are top quality! "This is great!" I exclaimed aloud...
And then the robot decides it's too boring and he rather go to Earth...
Wait, what? That wasn't the movie?
My eyebrows and expectations were raised!... But not for long.

The aliens
The teenagers
The robot (named 1359) prepares the alien crew to teleport down to Earth so they can learn about our music. Closer to home we meet Dee Dee and her friends, as they are having fun singing and dancing at the beach. The leader of the band is a jerk named Frankie, and he puts a stop to the song because no one is allowed to have too much fun. This Earth story seems okay at first, but soon enough the waves of garbage start piling up...
The truly stupid antics of the aliens goes on for a painfully long time. My excitement level was quickly dropping.

Most of the songs aren't too bad, actually. They're kept short and done well enough to not have you scrambling for the mute button. The dancing is also fun, and keeps the energy up.
Dee Dee and one of the aliens begin to really like each other, but Frankie and his boys won't tolerate any new people in town, especially weirdos with musical talent.
Adding to the nonsense are random subplots about an escaped convict and the befuddled old sheriff trying to find a UFO. Sigh.
Finally, after an entire hour of slapstick and stupid jokes, the aliens and humans decide to have a battle of the bands.

By then my expectations for greatness were dead. Nothing else here maintains the same level of quality as the opening music video, but thankfully there are moments when it tries.
Somehow, I was kept entertained, but there's just so much stupidity to witness that I had to start drinking my beers faster to understand it. Almost all the jokes failed so horribly that I began to hate most of the characters.

1359, incognito as Tom Servo's cousin

One of the best moments is near the end when Frankie sings about his emotions. He writhes around half naked in the forest with a mountain lion. It's moments like these, when the movie tries to be serious, that helps make the stupid story easier to sit through.
Who will Dee Dee choose to dance with forever? The asshole human, or the brain dead alien? Or maybe the lake monster? (yes, there's even a lake monster.)

Be sure not to miss:
- The song from the first planet with Jermaine Jackson. I want to watch that movie!
- Michael Berryman is fun as the escaped convict. I learned a lot about chainsaw etiquette.
- The local teenage hangout is called "Local Teenage Hangout"
- Apparently, Frankie keeps that mountain lion trapped in the boy's locker room at school.

Internet review:
"There's more seemingly random WTF moments than you can shake a stick at."  - vinnier

Should I watch it?
It's worth seeing, but only when you (and hopefully a dance partner) are drunk enough to handle the stupid comedy.

Intent to Kill (1992)

"And what was your intent? To kill?"  - Cpt. Jackson

A young policewoman relentlessly tries to bring down a ruthless drug kingpin.
Starring: Traci Lords, Scott Patterson, Yaphet Kotto

Link to IMDB

Cop stuff
Vickie Stewart is one tough cop, and she's going undercover to get info on the local Colombian drug dealers, specifically a man named Salvador. But all hell breaks loose when her cover is blown and the cops swoop in. These gangsters mean business, and pull out an arsenal of machine guns. Ten minutes in, and already about 25 people have been killed in the city streets. Salvador escapes, but the cops confiscate his large stash of cocaine.
Salvador's boss is not pleased with losing all the drugs, and gives him one week to come up with $50 million or he'll be killed. Salvador figures the best way to get the money is by stealing it from rival drug dealers, and thus begins his killing spree.

More cop stuff
Vickie's boyfriend is also a cop, but he's a total sleazeball. Their boss (superbly played by Yaphet Kotto) is angered with all the killings and explosions Vickie leaves in her wake, so she gets pulled off of the drug case. Looks like she's going to have to go rogue if she wants to get some work done!

It's a tough, gritty city with ruthless criminals, so the laughs are pretty sparse. About 1000 people get shot and 50 cars get wrecked, but even with all this violence it still ends up being quite boring.
They could have cut out 30 minutes of meandering pointlessness and still kept the main story intact. The action picks up again at the end, but by then I had lost interest.

"The less blood on the pavement, the more I sleep. And dammit, I need my sleep!"  - Cpt. Jackson

Traci Lords is definitely fun to watch here as a badass cop, but it's not enough to save the movie.

Be sure not to miss:
- The same cheesy song from Ice is here again! It's Stand Tall by Lost Art, but it doesn't seem to be on YouTube
- This was rated NC-17 for violence, but it's just the typical R rated stuff.
- A pair of panties and a little gasoline goes a long way!

A Time to Die (1991)

"You've probably heard it a million times, but I'm innocent."  - Jackie

A photographer teams up with a policeman to try to bring down a corrupt cop who framed her for drug possession.
Starring: Traci Lords, Jeff Conaway, Richard Roundtree

Link to IMDB

While working a crime scene, slick police officer Frank gets in a gunfight with some criminals. He's overwhelmed, so one of the crime scene photographers, Jackie, steps in and helps him take them down. She's new on the job, but her and Frank share the same boss now. In the first five minutes of the movie she takes about 50,000 photos, so she's definitely eager to get the job done.
Jackie is balancing her work as a photographer, dealing with her ex husband, and trying to spend time with her young son, Kevin. She can't see him often because she's on parole after being arrested for cocaine.

You'll see that the movie often has a sense of humour about itself, in the classic way B-movies often do, which is nice as some of the story gets a bit heavy.

As Frank and Jackie slowly become romantically involved, we learn about how she was wrongly accused of the drug charges, but Frank thinks he can help her. As Jackie keeps working with the police and investigating who framed her, she finds herself getting involved with police corruption and street violence.

The plot gets a bit serious at times, and by then I truly cared about the characters and wanted to see how it played out. The ending really surprised me! Some shit goes down that I never would have guessed.

"I'm a nice guy once I stop being a jerk."  - Frank

Maybe I just needed a rest from monsters, cyborgs and dick jokes, but I liked this movie. It may just be a generic thriller but there's something about the delivery that keeps it fun even when getting serious. Despite there being a lot less action, I enjoyed it even more than Ice.

I have to mention this one hilarious part. There's a sex scene cut in with the little boy innocently making himself breakfast! It's totally bizarre editing, but a great example of how this movie likes to have a bit of fun.

Cpt. Phipps reprimands a side plot

Be sure not to miss:
- For a seven year old, Kevin sure is a snappy dresser.
- That really long scream in the first scene.

Shock 'em Dead (1991)

"Every fuckin' retard thinks he's a rock star." - Johnny

The nerdy Martin makes a deal with the devil to become the greatest rock star in the world.
Starring: Stephen Quadros, Traci Lords, Laurel Wiley, Markus Grupa

Link to IMDB

Martin's just a weird guy working at a pizza joint, but when a local band is holding auditions for a new guitarist he decides to quit his job and take a chance at his dream of being a rock star. Unfortunately, he's terrible at guitar and the band kicks him out. A weird voodoo lady that creeps around has promised Martin that she can give him everything he's ever desired, at the cost of his soul. After a crazy dream sequence, Martin awakens in a mansion with three sexy ladies, which can only mean that he's become the greatest guitar player alive... Well, at least as far as the surprisingly limited movie budget will allow for.

Reborn as "Angel Martin," he heads back for another audition.
He impresses everyone with his new skills, including the band's manager, Lindsay. (Traci Lords)
With some awkward exposition, we learn that Martin and his three lady friends are basically voodoo zombies of some sort. An important part of the curse is that they can no longer eat snacks and pizza, but instead must devour the souls of living humans! It's just too bad everything is kept to a PG-13 level of violence... That is so not rock 'n roll!!

We eventually get to see the band perform a hilarious show for some record executives, but Martin's main concern is to brainwash Lindsay because he loves her and wants to eat her. Most of the movie is spent watching Martin being a total creep, doing everything he can to make us hate him. His band mates begin to realize something is wrong, but how do they stop an undead rock star!? Maybe with snacks? Oh boy, all this voodoo stuff gets pretty dumb.

There truly are some fun moments, but it seems the movie had no budget to do all the crazy scenes it should have. Instead of demonic rockstar adventures involving guitar battles, most of the movie keeps Martin at home, being a jerk that barfs and mopes around in spandex.

After three movies with her, it's officially become Traci Lords Appreciation Month!! here at EHC.
Not off to the best start so far, but there's four more movies coming that focus on her as the lead!

Be sure not to miss:
- The record executive's taste in rap music.
- Michael Angelo Batio is the demon at the start, as he's one of the few people to ever seriously learn the twin-V-necked guitar (pictured above.) He plays all the guitar here, and co-wrote the music with the director.
- The few songs we do get are pretty funny. "I'm in Love with a Slut" could be a classic!

Lady Terminator (1989)

"I'm not a lady. I'm an anthropologist!"  - Tania

aka: The Revenge of the South Seas Queen
The spirit of an ancient evil queen possesses the body of a young student, who then goes on a rampage that would make Arnold Schwarzenegger blush.
Starring: Barbara Anne Constable, Christopher J. Hart, Claudia Rademaker

Link to IMDB

This movie has been on the waiting list for a long time, but I'm sure glad that I got around to watching it!

The movie begins in the distant past of Indonesia and also right in the middle of a sex scene. Apparently, the Queen of the South Seas is hard to please, and she castrates unworthy men with an eel that lives in her vagina! One man shows up and proves to have some skills, as he pulls the eel out before she can kill him. The queen is pretty angry about losing her vagina eel and curses the man, saying that she'll return from the sea in 100 years to get revenge on his granddaughter.

You might think this is all too mystical to warrant using "terminator" in the title and that you've been cheated, but just wait... This movie is going to blow your mind.

Now in the present we meet Tania, who is an anthropologist (as she reminds us more than once) researching the old legends of the South Seas. While scuba diving she discovers the hiding place of the queen, and is possessed by her vengeful spirit... Which, as you might guess, means that an eel goes in her vagina.
Tania rises from the water as the unstoppable Queen of the South Seas, on a mission of destruction to kill the granddaughter of the man who bested her years ago.
This is when the plot begins borrowing from The Terminator, and by that I mean it directly recreates entire scenes from the movie!

We meet two characters that complete the main cast, Detective Max McNeil who is investigating the queen's first killing spree, and Erica, a local pop star who is the targeted granddaughter.
It doesn't take long before the queen starts hunting Erica, and Max becomes her guardian.

"We've seen more dead bodies than you've eaten hot dogs, so shut up and eat."  - Max

A small sample of their firepower.

Well, that's one way to destroy a hotel room.

Once the action starts it's pretty nonstop. With the help of Max's army buddies, and the knowledge of a wise old man who knows the queen's history, Max and Erica might just have a chance to stop the terminator queen!
Despite stealing from The Terminator, the plot still feels unique and surprising in its interpenetration of an over-the-top action movie that is not afraid to embrace absurdity.
The dialog is often hilarious, the music is perfect, and the ending is a tour de force of action and weirdness that will have you cheering.

Be sure not to miss:

- "Hey, you serve beer here, or just milk?"

Fast Food (1989)

"May God forgive me for setting you two clowns loose on society." - Dean Witler

Some sleazy college kids open a burger joint, and the burgers make people horny because of some sauce laced with drugs... But I couldn't stomach this!
Starring: Clark Brandon, Blake Clark, Tracy Griffith, with Jim Varney and Traci Lords

Link to IMDB

When it comes to trashy B-movies, I am a very forgiving viewer. I am willing to accept a lot of crap if you can keep my attention... But Fast Food basically just annoyed the hell out of me.

We meet these two idiots, Auggie and Drew, as they hustle and womanize all across their campus. Are these the main characters? And are we supposed to like them? Ugh! The Dean has had enough, and kicks them out of college.

Nothing happens for a long time but we do meet Wrangler Bob (Jim Varney,) a crude fast-food business man who makes all the burgers in town. There's some fun seeing Varney play a villain, but he doesn't do anything new with the role.

30 minutes into the movie, and we finally get to a real plot. Auggie's love interest, Sam, owns a local gas station that Wrangler Bob wants to turn into a restaurant, but Sam and Auggie decide to open their own burger joint instead... And it fails horribly.  Auggie, being the sociopath that he is, starts spiking the sauce with stolen chemicals that make people horny. Antics ensue, but Sam's place is now pumping out burgers and she's making lots of cash.

Burgers !
This happens.

Traci Lords finally shows up after more than an hour, but it's basically just a cameo role that goes nowhere.
Somehow, the ending gets even more boring than the beginning! I was constantly checking how much more movie I had to endure.
To be fair, there are a few laughs to find here, but they are very far apart and drier than a month old burger bun. A lot of pointless crap gets in the way of the story, and the premise for any fun feels completely wasted.

Be sure not to miss:
- At least the opening title font was awesome!
- I liked that Drew eventually calls Auggie on his shit. Even his friends find him disgusting!
- The judge's name is Judge Reinholte.
- Michael J. Pollard has a small role, and even makes a subtle reference to Bonnie and Clyde.

Manborg (2011)

"You're bonkers, Manborg. I love it!"  - Justice

A soldier is brought back to life as a cyborg, fighting demons alongside a group of survivors in a dystopian future.
Starring: Matthew Kennedy, Adam Brooks, Meredith Sweeney, Conor Sweeney

Link to IMDB

Hell has come to Earth, as an army of demons wage war against humankind. We witness a soldier being killed in a brave but futile attempt to kill the leader of the demons, Count Draculon. Fast forward years into the future, when the demons rule and humans are slaves, and that same soldier awakens as a cyborg. He was created by Dr. Scorpius, a man that works with the demons to turn humans into cyborg slaves, but Manborg has retained his humanity and freewill of the soldier he was before. He's quickly captured by the demons for malfunctioning, and thrown into prison with three renegades that are part of the human rebellion. The prisoners are forced to fight in a coliseum as entertainment, but Manborg will need to gain their trust if they want to survive.

Working as a team, they escape the prison and hide in the wastelands of the city. Together, they will need to form a plan before getting revenge on the armies of Hell. Manborg also has some serious contemplating to do, as he comes to terms with his past and the machine that he's become.
Justice, Mina and #1 Man
With all this craziness going on, the movie flies by at a quick 60 minutes. Movies that are designed to be "bad" or "cult" almost always fail, but Manborg works very well in keeping the tone and style that pays homage to the action, sci-fi and karate movies (as well as video games) of the 80s and 90s. Some of the humour falls flat, especially the Baron's crush on Mina, but overall the laughs keep coming.

"It's never too late to be a hero."  - Manborg

You will notice the extensive use of green screens instead of traditional sets, but don't let that dissuade you, it still retains the retro aesthetic as best it can and there are many cool practical effects too. With a tiny budget of only $1000, the green screen was a necessity.
Just like Manborg himself, underneath all the technology and chaos this movie has a lot of heart.

Be sure not to miss:
- Laser skateboards!
- Justice starts as a bit of a dick, but he became my favourite. His reaction to seeing homeless people is some of the most memorable dialog.
