True Stories (1986)

"I have something to say about the difference between American and European cities.
But I've forgotten what it is
." - Narrator

We visit a small town full of colourful characters.
Starring: David Byrne, John Goodman, Spalding Gray, Swoosie Kurtz

Link to IMDB

I had no idea that David Byrne made a movie, but I had to watch it immediately!

Our narrator
Byrne himself plays the nameless narrator and guide that is taking us on a tour of a small Texas town called Virgil, which is preparing to celebrate its 150th anniversary. It's a normal American town, but it's beginning to grow now that the local computer chip factory has become an essential part of the economy.

There's no traditional plot here, it's more of a hybrid of mockumentary, fourth-wall-breaking reveries and musical vignettes, as we travel around the town meeting the quirky people that live here.
There's a rich lazy woman that never gets out of bed, a preacher that's condemning the wickedness of computers, a lady that compulsively lies about her past, and many others.
The closest we have to a main character is Louis Fyne, a lonely bachelor who's looking for a lady to be his wife.

"I'm 6'3" and maintain a very consistent panda bear shape." - Louis

Louis
This isn't a musical but there are songs permeating many scenes as we get fashion shows, karaoke, a church choir, and other ways to showcase Byrne's great songwriting skills.

Things are very eccentric and random without a singular story to hold them together, but it remains focused on the themes of how we all share the same hopes, fears, excitement, and loneliness of living in the ever changing modern world.

Louis' search for love is at the center of all the chaos, and its sincerity and realism make a perfect anchor for us to keep coming back to. His story is the key to ensuring us that Byrne isn't making fun of small town America, but instead showing us that life is amazing even in the most mundane of places.

At the fashion show
The movie is colourful in every meaning of the word, and is an energetic celebration of weird ideas. The strangeness isn't forced though, it just flows naturally, making it feel normal and acceptable. There's no condescension or deceit here, just a peculiar examination of shopping malls, suburban sprawl, and the progress of the American landscape.

At church
Byrne's inspiration for the characters came from headlines he read in tabloid newspapers that piqued his interest, but the film really feels more like an extension of his own personality than it does a collection of fictional stories. His refreshing curiosity of the human endeavor is tangible in every scene.
If you're in the mood for some fun, optimistic postmodern cinema with great music, than True Stories is exactly what you need to see.

Space Rage (1985)

Judge: "You're banished from Earth forever."
Grange: "Fuck you."

Two men must stop a criminal from destroying a space colony.
Starring: Richard Farnsworth, Michael Paré, John Laughlin, Lee Purcell, William Windom

Link to IMDB

The Colonel
The movie opens with a cold-blooded bank robber named Grange getting arrested and facing the court of law. It's 200 years in the future, so his punishment for murder is to be banished from Earth to a penal mining colony on a distant planet.

The planet, which looks identical to the Arizona desert in every way possible, is not just a prison, there's an entire community of people that help maintain the mining operations, and here's where we meet the Colonel. He's a retired L.A. cop that lives on a ranch, respected by the community and always willing to help the prison guards if needed.
One such guard is Walker, an expert bounty hunter that watches over the prisoners and catches anyone that tries to escape. Walker better be careful now that Grange has arrived, because he's immediately planning a way to break out and escape off the planet.

The first half of the movie is a bit slow as Grange deals with prison politics, but we also get to spend time with the Colonel and Walker, and these guys are pretty cool.
When Grange does escape, there's plenty of action ready to explode! All of the inmates escape at once and they start terrorizing the civilians. (I guess they're full of "space rage.") Walker's on the hunt, but he's outnumbered and outgunned, so the Colonel comes out of retirement to help kick some ass!

Walker                                                 Grange

There's basically no sci-fi elements here at all, instead it's more of a modern western with the desert planet serving as the wild frontier. The plot is simple, but it's fun and the three main characters are played perfectly. There's a lot of action in the second half, with dune buggy chases, explosions and gunfire.

Lots of this !
It's quite fun seeing Richard Farnsworth beat down bad guys and wield a shotgun. He's like a geriatric Dirty Harry! Space Rage is straightforward, predictable and sloppy, but it redeems itself by being consistently entertaining.

Be sure not to miss:
- Badass line delivery: "I'll help you, you sorry son-of-a-bitch."
- Also, Grange delivers some truly epic 'Fuck you's.
- 200 years from now and people are still playing "Asteroids" at the arcade.
- The repeated song "Blood Money" will forever be stuck in your head.

Planet of the Vampires (1965)

"If there are any intelligent creatures on this planet, they're our enemies." - Capt. Markary

A team of astronauts are stranded on a dangerous planet.
Starring: Barry Sullivan, Angel Aranda, Norma Bengell, Evi Marandi

Link to IMDB

Capt. Markary
A crew of scientists led by Captain Mark Markary are aboard the spaceship Argos, but they are forced to land on a mysterious planet when their sister ship, the Galliot, crash lands there.
As soon as they land the crew of the Argos all go bonkers and start attacking each other! Thankfully, this inexplicable violence is brief and they're soon back to normal, and they focus on their rescue mission to the Galliot.

The mystery deepens when they find that the Galliot's crew have all killed each other, and there seems to be some alien force on the planet that can influence people's behaviour. Trapped on this haunted planet, Markary and his crew need to find some answers if they want to survive this unseen enemy, but uncovering the history of the planet might prove to be deadly.

The first of many surprises comes when the dead crew return to life! They're not just mindless zombies though, but they do need something from the survivors, and they're willing to destroy anyone that tries to stop the ancient and enigmatic plans that the planet is hiding!

"If I wasn't so wide awake, I'd swear I was dreaming." - Wess

The crew of the Argos

This was horror master Mario Bava's first sci-fi movie, and his fantastic gothic style works surprisingly well in the space setting. The plot slowly builds tension and an eerie mood as the crew's fear of the unknown begins to translate into a fear of each other. The "vampire" title is misleading, but there is something just as paranormal at work.
John Carpenter is a big fan of Bava's work, and I can see how this might have influenced The Thing in some scenes. This movie also feels like a direct precursor to Alien, with many similarities in the plot development. Although surprisingly, Ridley Scott claims to never have seen this before making Alien.

Something moves in the fog

The style and presentation are top notch for the times, but it does give the movie an outdated feel. Much like the original Star Trek series, you need to look past the melodramatic acting and papier-mâché rocks, and appreciate the story for what it is. That's not to say this movie looks cheap, because the special effects (which were all done in-camera,) look pretty awesome and create a gloomy, yet colourful world for the actors to get lost in.

This is a solid yet peculiar sci-fi pulp from the 60's, straddling the line between gothic vibes and futuristic aesthetics. It's got inventive atmosphere and tension, and one of the greatest Twilight Zone twist endings I've ever had the pleasure to be surprised by.

Lone Wolf McQuade (1983)

"My kind of trouble doesn't take vacations." - McQuade

A Texas Ranger takes on a dangerous crime boss.
Starring: Chuck Norris, David Carradine, Robert Beltran, Barbara Carrera

Link to IMDB

J.J. McQuade is not your average Texas Ranger; he's grumpy, disheveled and more interested in beer than being polite. But he's also one of the best Rangers alive, and his renegade style of law enforcement always gets the job done.
McQuade's captain isn't too keen on his unruly methods, so he's partnered him with the young and eager Deputy Kayo to try to reign him in, much to McQuade's chagrin, of course.

Next we meet Rawley Wilkes, a criminal kingpin that smuggles weapons and drugs around the country. Wilkes' front is that of a business man that also runs karate tournaments, so McQuade doesn't suspect him of any wrong doing other than being a jerk.

Wilkes and McQuade do have something in common though, and that's the beautiful Lola. She's clearly not happy about being married to Wilkes, so she and McQuade start getting romantic.
Tragedy strikes when McQuade's daughter is almost killed for witnessing one of Wilke's smuggling operations, and now McQuade and Deputy Kayo start investigating who has been causing trouble on their turf.

Kayo                                                Lola                                           Wilkes

The movie has a lot of fun with McQuade reluctantly accepting his new partner, but they slowly form a friendship as they learn to rely on each other. The closer McQuade gets to discovering Wilkes' crimes, the closer he's also getting to Lola, and this has "bad news" written all over it!

Instead of just mindless action there's more of a classic western tone to the story, with some unexpected moments that build tension. Heck, even the touches of romance fit into the story really well, but it does still have fun with exaggerated violence and machine guns blasting when necessary.

"Your lone wolf attitude has gotta change!" - Captain

There's not as much fighting as I expected, but there's still enough action to keep the pace fast, and of course the climactic battle between Norris and Carradine delivers the goods that you'd expect. My only complaint would be that Carradine doesn't get a lot to do through the movie, so he feels underused.

Although Norris is still the epic hero you'd imagine, it's fun seeing him play a more gritty version of himself here. Instead of an untouchable superman, he's more of an unwashed cowboy that doesn't fit into the modern world. I literally cheered a few times watching this, and it's easily one of the best movies Norris ever made!

Be sure not to miss:
- Wilkes' license plate is CARATE. Surely that's a portmanteau of Carradine and karate.
- McQuade hates vitamins!
- Falcon. He's so superbly melodramatic that he steals every scene he's in.
- The score is pretty fantastic, adding to the spaghetti western vibes.
- William Sanderson has a small role.

Dragonfight (1990)

"There are no heroes, just a bunch of goddamn pawns." - Falchion

A man fights back against a corporate game of killing.
Starring: Paul Coufos, Robert Z'Dar, Alexa Hamilton, Michael Paré, Charles Napier

Link to IMDB

Falchion
In the near future mega corporations around the globe are more powerful than the governments, and they've created a type of gladiatorial combat sport to gamble money and show their power.
A sleazy corporate lackey named Moorpark is in charge of finding the fighters, and he's chosen a big guy named Lochaber for the American business men while the Japanese have picked the highly trained Falchion.

The two men head to the designated battle zone (in this case the Arizona desert,) and prepare for battle. There's one problem though; Falchion has decided he's sick and tired of fighting for the greedy corporations that have no honour, and he refuses to begin the tournament with Lochaber.
Lochaber, on the other hand, only cares about winning money, and he tries to force Falchion to fight him by killing an innocent passer-by!!

Lochaber
Falchion's on the run now, but he gets some unexpected help from a feisty lady named Sandy, her bumbling uncle, and a bad ass park ranger. All of these characters work great together and form an unlikely team as Falchion tries to escape.

Meanwhile, Lochaber's gone full crazy and is killing every civilian he comes across... (Gee, there sure are a lot of people wandering around this supposedly isolated desert.) This also gives us a sub-plot of Moorpark scheming what to do now that the corporations have a murderer on the loose.

As more innocent lives are being taken, Falchion knows he's going to have to face his rival to protect his new friends and keep his honour, but Lochaber's proving to be an unstoppable force that's driven by the mystical voodoo powers of a sorceress! Say what!?... Yeah, things get bonkers!

As that last bit suggests there's some random mysticism thrown in here, which only adds to the awesome ridiculousness of the whole movie. There's a lot to laugh at, with wack dialog and exaggerated acting coming at you from every direction.
The plot is dirt simple but fast paced, highlighted by fist fights and sword duels, and it remains engaging.
I really liked the theme of Falchion trying to preserve truth, justice and honour in a corrupt world. Everything about the movie just seems to click together effortlessly like pure gold, even though this is nothing more than straight to VHS trash.

"It's got nothing to do with honour, we're talking about money." - Moorpark

Sandy                                  Uncle                                     Ranger Badass                            Moorpark

I've got to mention the stellar cast. Not only do we get Z'Dar as a great over-the-top villain, check out these supporting actors: James Hong as one of the corporate leaders, Charles Napier as the park ranger, and George Buck Flower as Sandy's goofy, inebriated uncle (and the narrator.) This is B-movie royalty, here!
They may not get a lot to do, but it's still awesome to see them all in one movie.

Be sure not to miss:
- The Uncle always has a beer in his hand, even in scenes where it makes no sense.
- How is all the fighting being filmed for the corporate guys to see? Are there hidden cameras on every rock?

Satan's Sadists (1969)

"Don't you know you can't get away from Satan?" - Anchor

A biker gang terrorize a young couple through the desert.
Starring: Russ Tamblyn, Gary Kent, John Bud Cardos, Jacqulin Cole, Regina Carrol

Link to IMDB

Anchor, his gal Gina, and a small group of wild bikers form the outlaw gang called The Satans. Rape and murder are no big deal for these fiends, as they live to assault and torment any tourists that they come across while cruising through the Californian desert.
At an isolated roadside diner we meet Johnny Martin, who just got home from Vietnam, and Tracy, a friendly waitress. Along with the other customers, they're enjoying their meals when The Satans come rolling into their lives. Uh oh!

Anchor and Gina
The gang starts disrupting the peace, and tensions rise among the customers as the threat of violence becomes inevitable. Johnny steps in to defend the civilians, but he's outnumbered and outgunned. While the gang are busy violating their new hostages, he and Tracy are able to escape into the desert, but it's not long before The Satans are on their trail.

Johnny and Tracy
The movie becomes an extended chase through the dirt and dust of the desert. The fact that it happens mostly on foot also means it's moving at a snail's pace. Johnny and Tracy wander in the desert for what seems like an eternity.
The only other thing of interest is that the bikers begin to fight among themselves, and this creates a rift in the gang that will have terrible consequences for everyone.

"In Vietnam, at least I got paid when I killed people." - Johnny

Something bad is going to happen

As far as gritty biker exploitation goes, this is a worthy entry in the genre, but there's not enough plot or action to really be all that engaging. I didn't care about Johnny or Tracy at all, and Russ Tamblyn's performance as the menacing Anchor is the main highlight here.
The movie has enough style and surprises to make it entertaining, but I've seen far better.

Be sure not to miss:
- Take a drink every time LSD is mentioned.

Deadbeat at Dawn (1988)

"Fuck your noise." - Goose

A man gets revenge against gangsters.
Starring: Jim Van Bebber, Paul Harper, Ric Walker, Marc Pitman, Megan Murphy

Link to IMDB

Goose is the leader of a street gang called the Ravens, and they're currently in a turf war with their rival gang, the Spiders, which are led by a mean psycho named Danny.
Goose's girlfriend is sick and tired of all the violence and danger that he gets into, so Goose reluctantly agrees to quit the gang so that they can live happily together. Their happiness is short-lived though, because under Danny's control the two gangs have merged into one, and their first order of business is to kill Goose's girlfriend!

Now heartbroken, all alone and angry, Goose wanders the streets in a pit of depression. He stays with his crazy junkie father for awhile, as he drinks himself senseless and contemplates ending his life. But then an old friend from the gangs pulls Goose out of his hole, and offers him a chance to get back into the gang life.

Danny
With nowhere else to go, Goose sets aside his anger and joins the gang again, hoping that he can make some money by helping Danny pull off a big heist. Goose knows that none of these thugs can be trusted, and he's biding his time before he can unleash his ultimate revenge!

Filmed over the course of four years whenever Jim Van Bebber had extra funds, this is independent raw filmmaking of the best kind, infused with a gritty punk energy that has rightfully earned this movie its long lasting cult status.
The violence and stunts are plentiful, visceral and shocking, making it ultimately more interesting than what you normally see in a polished action movie. Hollywood can fuck off, this is the real deal!

The final 20 minutes are a soul-crushing flurry of chaos and violence, as Goose exacts his revenge on the gang. I've seen every variety of gang movie imaginable, but this is something that completely stands on its own. There are even some experimental touches, which add some unique style to the simple, but unflinching story.
It's relentlessly gritty, bleak, and unashamed exploitation, but it also remains entertainingly fun, and even the flaws here can easily be viewed as clever filmmaking on a low-budget.
Deadbeat at Dawn is a rebellious and passionate ride you gotta take!

Remote Control (1988)

"There's something wrong with this movie." - Cosmo

A video store clerk uncovers a brainwashing conspiracy.
Starring: Kevin Dillon, Deborah Goodrich, Christopher Wynne, Frank Beddor

Link to IMDB

Cosmo
Cosmo and Georgie are a couple of dudes working at a video rental store, and they just got a new sci-fi VHS in that all the customers are eager to watch. The movie's called "Remote Control" but Cosmo's not too interested in it because he's falling in love with a new girl named Belinda.
Cosmo's made a good decision, because we know that this new movie is infecting the people that watch it with the urge to kill each other!!

One such viewer is a jerk named Victor, who also happens to be Belinda's boyfriend, and despite the fact that he's already begun killing people he appears normal enough to everyone.
Since the murders are all linked to the video store the police come looking for Cosmo and Georgie, so now they're on the run as fugitives, but they're also starting to put the pieces together about the nefarious mind-control affects of "Remote Control."

Since Belinda's life is in danger, Cosmo goes to protect her... by kidnapping her at gunpoint! Now our unlikely heroes have to solve the mystery of the deadly VHS and prove their innocence. When they realize the brainwashing is spreading throughout the city they head to the studio where the movie was made to find answers, and angry Victor is right behind them!
Things get weird!

Belinda                                      Georgie                                    Victor

The premise had me thinking of Videodrome, except that this is a light-hearted romp drenched in neon clothing and corny one-liners. Not only does it serve as a love-letter to the 80's VHS craze, it's also an homage to the classic sci-fi era of the 50's.
Suffice to say, the tapes are being made by something from outer space, and the movie's not afraid to get as wildly melodramatic as those old-fashioned sci-fi movies loved to do.

"Come on, enjoy the movie!" - Mr. Denver

Lots of this
I think the third act actually kind-of falls apart. Sure, there's explosions and suspense as Cosmo and the gang uncover more of the global brainwashing conspiracy, but it feels needlessly convoluted compared to the more straight-forward story we had before.
If you've been craving to watch a movie in which people are constantly watching a movie about people watching a movie, then this is perfect for you. Otherwise, it was just a fun "one time" watch that I'll likely forget.

Arena (1989)

"Could this be the contender the human race has waited for?" - Announcer

One man becomes an unlikely star in a galactic fighting tournament.
Starring: Paul Satterfield, Hamilton Camp, Claudia Christian, Marc Alaimo, Armin Shimerman

Link to IMDB

Steve
The year is 4038 and the entire galaxy is entertained by a popular fighting competition between champions from various planets. Monsters and robots have intense battles in the arena, but it's very rare that humans fight since we just aren't big enough to compete against the alien gladiators.

Steve Armstrong lives on the space station where the arena is, but things aren't going so well for him. Recently fired from his job at a restaurant, Steve and his pal Shorty are desperately in need of some money.
They get themselves into trouble when they are caught stealing from two shady business men, the ruthless Rogor and his gunman Weezil.

Fearing for his life, Steve decides his only chance to payback Rogor is to try and make some money in the arena. Luckily, he's a talented fighter, and his skills have caught the eye of an arena manager named Quinn that offers to coach him.

With Shorty's help and a bit of luck, Steve actually wins his first battle! He's an instant celebrity, and becomes a top contender as his winning streak continues. His good luck is soon to run dry though, because Rogor's scheming behind-the-scenes to put an end to Steve's triumph!

Shorty                                           Quinn
There are some surprisingly good creature and make-up effects here, with all sorts of aliens to see in action or wandering around in the background. You'll see a giant grasshopper monster, a cybernetic werewolf demon, an android lizard-man, and more! The cast of humans are pretty good too, with some talented actors here. Oddly enough, Steve is probably the most boring character but he's still likeable and we want to see him win.

Weezil and Rogor

The first half of the movie kind-of drags while everything gets set into motion, and although the quirky characters keep it interesting it's still a bit dull. When Steve's rise to fame does start it's a pretty basic formula that every boxing movie has done before... Except this time with crazy alien monsters!!
It might be simple and cheesy, but when it's kicking ass and showcasing the special effects, it's also a lot of fun.

Be sure not to miss:
- Space beer looks pretty good.

The Pit (1981)

"They don't eat chocolate bars." - Jamie

A really weird kid finds a really weird pit.
Starring: Sammy Snyders, Jeannie Elias, Andrea Swartz, Larua Hollingsworth

Link to IMDB

Jamie Benjamin is a very strange 12 year old boy, he's a constant troublemaker at school and a total pervert towards females of all ages. Oh, and he also has a secret pit in the forest full of little weird creatures he calls trogologs!
Hated by kids and adults alike, Jamie doesn't have any friends except for his teddy bear, and he even hears Teddy's voice in his head when they have conversations. It's peculiar, but Jamie has no one else to talk to.

When Jamie's parents go away for a week, they hire a young lady named Sandy to be his nanny. She has experience with troubled children, so she's not intimated by the idea of caring for Jamie and she makes an effort to be his friend. She's soon going to get more than she bargained for, because Jamie quickly falls in love with her.

Sandy
Time for some pit talk. It's a large hole that no one except Jamie knows about, and he goes there to watch these little troll-like critters that are stuck down in it. Jamie tells Sandy about the trogologs, and she humours him by suggesting he should feed them chocolate, but Jamie soon realizes that they'll only eat meat.

After spending all his money at the butcher shop, he's gotta find a new way to get meat for his pit pals... Can you guess what happens?
Well, I'm just going to say that the list of people Jamie and Teddy don't want around anymore is pretty long, and Sandy better be one step ahead if she wants to stay out of the pit!

This is an intriguing and unusual movie in all the best ways possible. The creepiness is laid on thick, but not about the pit, no, it's Jamie himself that is the source of the disturbing vibes. He's so goddamn creepy! There's a lot of tension building about him falling in love with Sandy, spying on her and being a pervert, and that almost makes the middle of the movie drag a little bit. Honestly, that slow sensation is mostly just because I was dying to know more about the pit creatures.

When the pit does become the main focus of the plot, things become even more brilliantly bonkers. The dark humour aspects of the movie get a chance to shine here, as Jamie starts luring people into the woods to meet the hungry trogologs.

Wing night in the pit
The overall tone of the movie is difficult to pinpoint. It's often intense and dark, but also full of fun and outrageous moments. Much of this is shaped by the unpredictable Jamie, who is one of the strangest psychos I've seen on the screen in awhile.
The Pit is definitely unique and memorable, with a perfect mix of humour, Twilight Zone eeriness, and wacky critters.
