Quiet Fire (1991)

"I'm not getting good vibes from this." - Jana

Watch one man's mission to bring down a corrupt senator.
Starring: Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Nadia Marie, Lance Lindsay, and not enough Robert Z'Dar

Link to IMDB

Jesse
After returning from the Vietnam war, Jesse Palmer has been operating his own body-building gym and enjoying a simple life, but when an old war buddy shows-up full of bullets and warns Jesse that he will "be next," his life is about to get more complicated.

Additionally, we're introduced to a politician named J. Whelan. He's also a war vet from Nam who's now trying to get his seat in the senate, but we quickly learn that he's secretly engaged in the criminal activity of dealing large amounts of weapons on the black market.
The set-up is about as subtle as a brick to the face.

Soon enough, Jesse's being chased down by men with guns trying to kill him. He goes to his saucy ex-girlfriend, Jana, for a place to hide, and much to her annoyance she gets caught-up in Jesse's problems.
He can't get any help from the police though, because two detectives that are keeping an eye on him work for the corrupt Whelan.

It takes forever and about 40 minutes to get all of this predictable plot going, but eventually things get a bit more exciting in the second half... Or at least more amusing.

Jesse and Jana do a lot of hiding, peeking through window blinds, and snooping around as they try to find answers on what the bad guys are up to. It seems that Jesse and Whelan have a connection from their past, and our hero's going to have to use his fists and wits to survive and get justice.
Whelan's no fool though, and he calls in two professional female killers named Hector and Jax to stop Jesse.

Jana                                                            The great Z'Dar                                                           Whelan

You really need to be in the right frame of mind to watch this, because if you expect action, intrigue or drama you will be bored. But if you go in looking for the cheesy, unintentional comedy that is here (and can stay awake long enough) you'll be rewarded with incredibly poor acting, silly fights and sloppy filmmaking that are ideal for making jokes.

Hector and Jax

One of the reasons I picked Quiet Fire was because Robert Z'Dar plays one of the bad guys, but unfortunately he gets very little to do. That sums up a lot of aspects of this movie; all of the ingredients are here for a good action crime movie, but everything fails to work in any way except a funny disaster.

I watched this alone, but it likely would have been more enjoyable in a group setting.

Be sure not to miss:
- $300 for a VCR
- Worst pick-up line ever: "Come back to my place for some carrot juice."
- Karen Black has a small role.
- Jesse wears sloppy grey jogging pants for 99% of the movie.

Should I watch it?
Despite some fun moments, it's pretty forgettable.

Attack of the Beast Creatures (1985)

"Was it rats?" - Keith

aka: Hell Island
Survivors of a shipwreck find trouble on a deserted island.
Starring: Robert Nolfi, Julia Rust, Robert Lengyel, Lisa Pak, John Vichiola

Link to IMDB

Somewhere in the Atlantic ocean a shipwrecked group of about eight tourists land on an unknown island. Everyone is suitably frightened and argumentative as they assess their situation and try to think of what to do next. They head inland with the hopes of finding food, shelter or any sign of civilization. Their arrival has not gone unnoticed, as a small figure in the forest is secretly watching them.

Two of the main characters are John and Mr. Morgan, and in-between arguments they keep the party stumbling along through a plethora of walking scenes, but at least it establishes the seriousness and isolation of their situation.
They soon discover the island has mysterious dangers when one guy falls into a pond of acid that melts his skin off!! It feels totally random, but it's a great chance for some bloody gore.
Despite the tragedy, everyone keeps their composure for one of the most unnecessarily comprehensive berry-picking scenes ever.

"You wanna pick the berries!? Then you pick the berries!!" - Phillip

Definitely not rats
Nighttime finally arrives and we get some payoff on the pervasive sense that the group has been watched and followed by something unknown.
As the title claims, they're not beasts and they're not creatures, they are "beast creatures!!" And holy shit, they look funny.
They have the size and temperament of rabid squirrels, and these vicious little buggers attack the group with razor sharp teeth and claws!

Bitten, bruised and terrified, the group continue their trek across Connecticut the island. The critters persist in their harassment, which results in many great moments of unintentional comedy as we watch these people fight back against the little, clunky wooden puppets.

The group dynamic begins to crumble, as the survivors unknowingly walk towards more secrets that the island has kept hidden.

With basically zero plot progression and no character development, this is a bare-bones little story, but that's all it needs to be. Despite the terrible acting and illogical dialog, it's delivered sincerely enough that the suspense kinda works. The spooky, yet charming synth music also helps, as it adds an unnecessary epic quality to otherwise dull moments (like picking berries.)

when Beast Creatures attack

I imagine some sections would bore people to tears, but I must have been in the perfect mood because I enjoyed it much more than common sense can justify. It's often muddy and always awkward, but I continually found laughs and enjoyment at the absurd delivery.

Be sure not to miss:
- Set in 1920... For no apparent reason.
- When they find the guy that melted in the acid, John kneels down and touches the guy's shoe as if to check for a pulse or something. I have no idea why, but that tiny detail just killed me!

Saving Christmas (2014)

Kirk Cameron tries to "put the Christ back in Christmas."

Link to IMDB

Out of all the movies shown at Exploding Ham Cinema, this is only the second to earn The Bullard Effect... A movie so worthless, that looking at a picture of Mike Bullard is a better way to spend your time.

The Bullard Effect
I made it through about 18 minutes and then realized that this is basically Kirk Cameron's personal propaganda disguised as a family comedy.

I skipped ahead to see how it all unfolds but it's not even a movie in the traditional sense, just random scenes of Kirk sycophantly explaining his warped views about Christmas.

You might assume the theme is about reconnecting with Jesus or finding faith, but no, it's actually the complete antithesis of a standard religious message, and instead Kirk speaks of his delusional theories about embracing consumerism and hot cocoa.

You know how they say that even Satan can quote the Bible for his own use... Well, so can Kirk Cameron!
To be perfectly fair, the idiot is just trying to spread holiday cheer, but he comes across as a delusional, insulting and misguided creep.

Happy holidays to everyone, including Mike Bullard, but not Kirk Cameron. Fuck that guy.

Black Devil Doll from Hell (1984)

"These are the only eyes that will see me naked before I'm married." - Helen

A woman finds an evil doll that changes her life.
Starring: Shirley L. Jones, and a doll

Link to IMDB

Black Devil Doll from Hell is one of those movies that leaves an everlasting impression on anyone that sees it, so come with me on a journey into the bizarre...

The opening credits are a tedious seven minutes of sonorously slimy gronked-out guitar licks to the brain (off to a great start,) and then finally we are introduced to a woman named Helen.
She's a lonely, middle-aged lady that has been a devout Christian her entire life, and despite her friend's constant attempts to find a man that she can date, Helen has decided to save her virginity for when she hopefully gets married.

One day Helen stops at an antique shop and purchases a ventriloquist puppet that piques her curiosity. The shopkeeper warns her that the doll has a strange history... Or something... It's not entirely clear because the dialog is rendered inaudible by a loud, high-pitched noise coming from the VCR... Hold on, let me fix the tracking... Nope, that didn't help...
Wait a second, is this sound actually part of the movie!!?

Shot on a handheld camcorder and seemingly capturing the audio with the built-in microphone, many moments are nearly incomprehensible. It's a visual and audio disaster but don't get me wrong, it's still hilariously watchable, you just have to brace yourself for the ultimate low-fi experience.

So, back to that shrill noise I mentioned...
At first, I honestly thought my fire alarm was going off, and then I suspected that the quality of the VHS had degraded over the years and the sound was corrupted... Wrong! This high-pitched, feral screech is actually "music" that was intentionally added!!

This is the magic of Black Devil Doll from Hell, and we've only just begun.

Happy with her new little friend, Helen poses him in a chair so that she has someone to talk to, but we quickly see that the doll is alive and he spies on Helen in the... *ssskkkkkrrreeeeeeeeeeeee*
Oh, god! The noise is back!!!!

The doll is superbly creepy, and Helen begins disliking the way it seems to watch her and she has nightmares about it attacking her. The tension builds for awhile as Helen grows more uncomfortable.
And then the doll ties her down and rapes her. A lot.
Wait, it gets weirder.
Although terrified at first, Helen soon realizes that she enjoys having this evil little doll screw her brains out; and sweet-buttery-Jesus, I'm rewarded with one of the most bizarre scenes I've ever watched!!
No matter how strange you think it might be, it's actually much stranger.

"Wake up, bitch!" - The doll

The next day, Helen has become a new woman with uncontrollable carnal desires, but the doll has vanished without a trace. Now desperate for more sex, Helen decides it's time to find a real man, but the forces of evil have other plans for her.

VHS box art
The movie is quite short but it does still find ways to include pointless scenes that are synonymous with watching paint dry, and yet I wasn't bored for a second! It's just too damn peculiar and surprisingly sincere to take my eyes off the screen.
When the music isn't a complete garbled mess of high-pitched static, it actually employs some funky little Casio tunes that are quite amusing.

Black Devil Doll from Hell is truly a relic from a bygone era.
Created by one man, Chester Novell Turner, this simple homemade project became an underground cult hit without him even realizing it until 2013. Copies of the rare VHS have become highly sought after collectors items, and its also been archived in the Yale University Library to ensure its preservation.

That is the beautiful dichotomy of outsider, trash art like this. It might offend all your sensibilities but it still earns a place in history by continually attracting viewers with its perplexing lunacy.

Be sure not to miss:
- That stuffed bunny on the dresser has seen some serious shit. It's blank, expressionless eyes are almost like a surrogate for what the audience is also witnessing.
- If you think I was exaggerating about the high-pitched screeching music, you can hear a song for yourself, here on Bandcamp. (volume warning)

The Wraith (1986)

"Roadblocks can't stop something that can't be stopped." - Sheriff Loomis

A mysterious driver challenges a gang of punks.
Starring: Charlie Sheen, Nick Cassavetes, Sherilyn Fenn, Randy Quaid, and cars

Link to IMDB

Jake,
barely in this movie
Jake is the new cool guy in an Arizona town and it takes approximately 10 seconds for him to find trouble. The streets are ruled by a psychopath named Packard and his drug-addled punk friends, and these clowns are always looking for a fight or a new car to steal. Packard is a true scumbag, and it's established that he's even murdered people that got in his way.

Jake meets a girl named Keri and they instantly like each other, but of course she's actually dating Packard, who viciously controls her like a piece of property. This puts Jake on the top of Packard's shit list!

It turns out that Jake isn't the only fresh face in town, because there's also a new mysterious car driven by an unknown man in a black leather disguise. As soon as Packard sees the car he wants to claim it for himself, so one of his thugs races the car through the desert but they both explode in a fiery crash! The mystery car magically reconstructs itself and vanishes without a trace!!

Packard
We are left clueless, assuming that Jake and the mystery man (referred to as the Wraith) are the same person but there's no confirmation on this, and the car seems to be a ghost or alien because it appeared from the sky in a ball of light during the opening credits.
The origin of the Wraith is slowly and awkwardly revealed, which does nothing except add to the surmounting confusion and a realization that Jake has been entirely removed from the story for the last 50 minutes!
Dear movie, what are you doing!?

This is one of those movies that assumes you read the entire spoiler-filled plot synopsis on the back of the VHS box, because it leaves many things unexplained or incoherent in the actual viewing.

Anyways, the Wraith continues to strike fear into Packard and his goons as it drives them off the road and destroys their cars with a powerful gun. Sheriff Loomis is trying to find the cause of all this mayhem, but the Wraith can never be found... There's not really any plot and most of the time is spent with the annoyingly slimy punks, so it actually gets pretty damn boring.

"When you feel nothing, you can do anything." - Packard

Sheriff Loomis                                                        Keri

There are some good action chase scenes and the experienced cast do a decent job, but there's no protagonists to root for (except maybe Keri.) It's hard to imagine a lack of entertainment so profound when the premise is seemingly foolproof for a fun time. It's got explosions, cheeseburgers and fast cars... but it all feels too formulaic and cliché.
There's a whole lot of pointless and confusing elements sprinkled throughout, which makes the movie feel like it's a graveyard where rejected ideas from other movies have come to die.

Be sure not to miss:
- The sheriff has some very unique insults for the punks.
- The car is named the "Turbo Interceptor" and that is cool.
- Rughead is played by the great Clint Howard, and his crazy wig was inspired by Eraserhead.

Motel Hell (1980)

"Meat's meat, and a man's gotta eat!" - Vincent

Friendly farmers enjoy the finer things about harvesting human meat.
Starring: Rory Calhoun, Nina Axelrod, Nancy Parsons, Paul Linke

Link to IMDB

Vincent Smith and his sister Ida have a pig farm in the country where they are locally famous for selling the tastiest smoked meats at their cozy little motel. One night, a suspicious motorcycle crash leaves a young lady named Terry stranded at the motel. Vincent and Ida treat her like family, helping her heal and cope with her pain, and even the Sheriff (who is Vincent's brother) agrees the girl should rest on the farm awhile.

Vincent and Ida Smith

The movie has been building spooky vibes and it's not long before we see what's really happening on the farm. The Smith family have been causing vehicle accidents on the highway in order to collect living people for their cannibalistic tastes!! *Dun-dun-dunnnnn*
Vincent truly likes Terry, so she'll be safe for now, but his other victims are "planted" alive in the ground and fed until they're ripe and ready to become a tasty meat snack! It's a truly morbid and nasty garden of death, but there's a touch of comedy through the movie which creates a perverse and dark humorous vibe.

"Sometimes I wonder about the karmic implications of these actions." - Vincent

Terry
Sheriff Smith

A lot happens in this movie, but it usually doesn't advance the story anywhere. Thankfully, the main characters are fun to watch even though they are murderous weirdos. It's slow but steady as they capture new victims for the slaughter, yet the movie remains entertainingly quirky, grisly and always surprising me with its eccentricities.
More conflict eventually arises, as the two brothers have different plans for the innocent Terry...
Things gets weird.

I'm not really sure what the intended tone was supposed to be because it shifts so often. It's trashy and disturbing one moment, and then corny satire the next. It doesn't all work, but there's no denying the genuine aura of demented creepiness and gleeful creativity here. Rory Calhoun's great performance also helped earn the movie's cult status.
Clearly an inspiration for some of Texas Chainsaw 2, this is the type of movie that requires a bit of off-kilter degeneracy from its audience, so of course I felt right at home.

Be sure not to miss:
- Only $2.95 for all that meat! I don't care what it's made of, that's a good deal.

Alien Contamination (1980)

"If I have to die with the rest of the world then I want to have clean underwear." - Holmes

aka: Contamination
An alien biological weapon infiltrates Earth.
Starring: Louise Marleau, Ian McCulloch, Marion Mase, Siegfried Rauch

Link to IMDB

Col. Holmes
When a mysteriously abandoned shipping vessel is found off the coast of New York, the police and health officials go aboard to look for evidence of the crew's fate. Besides a few mutilated corpses all they find are hundreds of weird avocado-like eggs incubating in the ship's hold. These slimy orbs quickly reveal that they're full of dangerous acid goo, and any human that comes into contact with the acid immediately (and very violently) explodes!!

Lt. Aris of the NYPD is the only man to escape and he's soon working with Colonel Stella Holmes from the Department of Defense, as the government takes over the emergency situation of what has been found aboard the ship.

Holmes and her scientists begin to suspect the eggs are some type of deadly bacteria that would not normally exist on Earth. They officially have a "space egg" problem, but who's responsible for transporting this deadly cargo around the globe?

Holmes decides to contact an astronaut that returned from a Mars mission a few years ago with a bizarre story about finding an evil alien presence. That man is Hubbard, who lives as a recluse drunk after being ridiculed and discharged from the space program for his lunatic rants about extraterrestrial life...  But now Holmes realizes that Hubbard was right and they need his help!

Definitely not an avocado

The first half builds a competent and suspenseful sci-fi thriller with great atmosphere, but around 45 minutes the plot begins to suffer from the mundane. It's fun watching the team of Holmes, Aris and Hubbard come together and unravel the mystery of the slimy space eggs, but a whole lot of nothing begins to happen when they follow the clues to South America.

Lt. Aris                                                         Hubbard

Despite a serious delivery, the movie also adds a nice amount of R-rated gore, subtle humour and B-movie nonsense to make it enthusiastic. Sitting through the lackluster middle section does reward you with a ridiculous climax, including some very memorable special effects, but the story lost its ambition somewhere along the way and everyone forgot what type of movie they had started with.

The Headless Eyes (1971)

"I am twisted!" - Arthur

A crazy guy goes on a murder spree after losing one of his eyes.
Starring: Bo Brundin, Ann Wells, Kelley Swartz

Link to IMDB

Arthur Malcom is a poor, struggling artist that has resorted to burglarizing homes to help pay his rent, but one such crime goes terribly wrong when a lady stabs him in the eye to protect herself. Arthur becomes quite depressed and distraught about losing his eyeball, and when a couple of snobs mock him for being a weirdo he kills them in a fit of rage!
It seems like Arthur just wants to focus on making art but instead he starts killing hookers and scooping out their eyeballs with a spoon! He quickly claims 14 victims, and the police are clueless about who the spoon-wielding serial killer could be.

We eventually get some backstory and context for Arthur's bohemian lifestyle when his concerned ex-girlfriend visits him, but he's not interested in friends anymore. Ever since losing an eye, his mind has snapped and he's often delivering unintentionally silly rants like a madman.

"Some kinda pervert... demented... I dunno." - Detective

Arthur continues to stalk ladies and collect eyeballs for some type of art masterpiece, but things change when he meets a young lady named Gingy that is honestly interested in his bizarre art projects. They begin to bond, but Arthur is conflicted about the idea of having a friend again even though she makes him feel normal. Maybe Gingy can unknowingly cure him of his madness. Well, after seeing what Arthur is capable of that is one big fucking "maybe," I assure you!

Gingy
This is the type of trash that separates the casual B-movie fans from the hardcore ones. Many people will struggle to commit themselves to the absolutely twisted nature, style and quality of the movie, which also means they won't be rewarded with a perfect storm of experimental jumbled images and chaotic story line. There's not really any talent involved here, but somehow it all remains captivating.

The blood and violence isn't intense, but it almost captures the creepy and garish vibes of the great Herschell Gordon Lewis. The X rating was actually an unofficial and self-imposed one, done as an attempt to lure curious audiences into the theater.

Despite the music often being a repetitive drone, there's a great mix of distorted experimental sounds smashing together like mercurial slugs clogging the drain of your sensory input. The sounds rev-up even more to accompany Bo Brundin's unrestrained performance of Arthur losing control.
The Headless Eyes is as demented as low-budget cult horror can get and yet still remain entertaining by the filmmaker's sheer determination to portray a dark and trippy descent into madness.

Eyes without a face

Be sure not to miss:
- Who knew that waiting for an elevator could be so intensely captured on film!

"Breasts and blood, it's what America wants to see." - Kathy

Girls go on a killing spree to get rid of scummy men.
Starring: Debi Thibeault, Karen Nielsen, Lisa Schmidt, Simone Reyes, Ruth Collins

Link to IMDB

A group of teenage girls are facing a lot of abuse from the guys at school, including sexual assault and multiple kicks to the gut if they try to stand-up for themselves. Wow, the guys here are intense slime balls, so the girls decide to bring axes to school and murder the jerks in the gymnasium!
Not being content with just killing a handful of assholes, the girls decide they will go on a killing spree to eliminate every man that has ever offended a woman!

"Call them teenage slasher sluts if you like, I just did." - Narrator

The Mayor,
ready for war
The Mayor is growing enraged about all the dead bodies appearing in his city, as the group of young ladies have been busy luring men out of bars to be blown away by their arsenal of guns. In fact the entire male population of America is now afraid, as women everywhere begin killing any man that shows the slightest hint of being rude, and the media flurry begins as the "Scum Buster" girls become more and more infamously celebrated.

Premises along a similar line have worked in other movies, and although it might sound like a crazy-fun time here, this movie is completely disappointing.
Most of the story is told in flashbacks as the girls explain their story from a secret hide-out, and it's really confusing to discern the past from the present because everything is super slops.
Damn, this movie is one stupid mess.

"It's like being Charles Bronson!" - Diane

The movie's trying to be a dark comedy that lampoons the popular sex-revenge movies with social commentary, but it completely fails at everything except being a dull campy turd populated with some of the most annoying characters ever.
A few minor moments were amusing, and the final shoot-out scene was surprisingly stylish considering that nothing before it had any style, but overall I was mostly just irritated.
There's not even an exploitation factor to enjoy here, as all the violence happens off camera and the thrills are non-existent. It's dumb trash, but not in any way that might be charming or compelling.

Be sure not to miss:
- The "Rock Jock" advertisement was funny.
- But the Hooter Honk and Gore Gong jokes failed horribly.

Forbidden Zone (1980)

"Why does it feel so good to be sooooo bad?" - Queen Doris

A journey to the 6th dimension gets much weirder than you might expect.
Starring: Susan Tyrrell, Marie-Pascale Elfman, Hervé Villechaize, Matthew Bright

Link to IMDB

First, some backstory...
Richard and Danny Elfman wanted to film a showcase of the wacky stage performances of their musical theater troupe, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo (that would eventually evolve into the band Oingo Boingo.) They expanded all their ideas to make a truly demented movie.

Frenchy
The dysfunctional Hercules family have moved into a new house that just happens to have a portal to the sixth dimension in the basement. Frenchy, the daughter, is forbidden to go near it but her curiosity gets the better of her and she falls through to a new world. Considering that the place she came from was a circus sideshow of freaks living in a German expressionist's nightmare, the incomprehensible insanity of the sixth dimension basically looks just like home.

The dimension is ruled by the psychotic Queen Doris, who promptly has Frenchy locked in a dungeon, but it seems like King Fausto has another plan for this beautiful girl that fell into his world.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Hercules family decides to rescue Frenchy from whatever danger she has found through that damn portal.

Very little about this movie makes any sense at all. I guess there is some plot to follow as various people explore the sixth dimension in hopes of finding Frenchy, but it's entirely overwhelmed by non-stop disorder and random cabaret skits. The story eventually takes us to some weird version of Hell (if we weren't there already,) and it seems like half the neighbourhood gets pulled into the forbidden zone sooner or later.

"You know the chickens are always ready to help any way we can." - Chicken

King Fausto and Queen Doris

As expected, there's a lot of music here as the characters occasionally burst into song with plenty of screaming, horns honking and limbs flailing wildly; and although the music isn't terrible I felt that very few tunes were memorable.
Everything on screen is completely bonkers, and the greasy make-up and eccentric art design adds to the sensation of freewheeling chaos that joyfully looms over every moment. Raunchy, depraved and fearless, there's something here to offend pretty much everyone (although it's clearly done for laughs.) This ensures many moments will be forever seared into your brain whether you like it or not, but hopefully someone in the audience will go home traumatized.

The Princess and her Frog servant

If you're in the mood for something too surreal, too juvenile, and too inappropriate to explain with words, this is absolutely perfect for you.
