A Bucket of Blood (1959)

Leonard: "What's it called?"
Walter: "Dead Cat."

A struggling artist finds a bloody way to make popular art.
Starring: Dick Miller, Anthony Carbone, Barboura Morris, Ed Nelson

Link to IMDB

Walter Paisley works as a busboy in a cafe, surrounded by hip poets and burgeoning artists of the beatnik generation. He's a dim-witted social misfit but the people like him well enough because he's so friendly, except for his boss, Leonard, who constantly hounds him to focus on his job. Walter eagerly soaks up the art around him, with a dream to make an artistic statement of his own one day.

After accidentally killing his neighbour's cat, Walter is inspired to create something from the poor animals death, so he wraps the corpse in plaster to disguise it as a cat-shaped statue. The art piece is a real hit with all the local artists, as they're intrigued and amazed at Walter's creative talents. Being accepted is exciting, and now that he's had a taste of popularity he's eager for more, but as Walter succinctly puts it "he doesn't have another cat." A clumsy misunderstanding with an undercover cop leads to Walter smashing the man's head with a frying pan! As expected, Walter has now found the subject for his next art piece.

The guilt and confusion Walter feels is quickly replaced by the glory and success he receives from his peers when they see his next statue. Leonard learns of Walter's deadly artistic method and is sickened by it, but also realizes that he can make a lot of money if he lets Walter keep working. Compelled by greed and peer pressure, both men let the "creativity" flow, even when Walter's ambition slowly becomes more about revenge than trying to find acceptance.

"Life is an obscure hobo, bumming a ride on the omnibus of art." - Maxwell

The "Murdered Man"
Leonard

Dick Miller is great, he plays Walter's naivete very believably, balancing the innocence and desperate qualities of his unraveling mind as Walter becomes obsessed with fame at any cost. The story itself is rather predictable, but since it's told so well with a mix of suspense and humour it remains compelling. The brief length also keeps it focused, and it's structured much like a classic episode of The Twilight Zone.

The "Dead Cat"

There is a touch of absurdity here, but it enunciates the social satire on how ridiculous the facades of pretentious artists can be. If someone is going to be able to successfully make commentary on postmodern art mixed with a weird little horror story, you know it's going to be Roger Corman. He filmed this in only five days with a small budget, but he wasn't surprised when it was hailed as a classic satire on how amoral and loathsome the film industry can be towards its outsider artists.
Subtext aside, it's a well directed, clever and imaginative minor classic.
Be sure not to miss:
- How the movie got its title. It's subtle but highlights an important moment.
- Dick Miller would eventually play other characters also named Walter Paisley. Most notably in Chopping Mall and The Howling.

Lawnmower Man 2: Jobe's War (1996)

"Jack in. Jack off. What's the difference?" - Jobe

aka: Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace
Jobe is back, and still wants to rule the world through virtual reality.
Starring: Matt Frewer, Patrick Bergin, Austin O'Brien,

Link to IMDB

Stephen King was so disgusted with the first Lawnmower Man movie that he fought to have name his name removed from the project... Of course a sequel had to be made!

Miraculously, Jobe survived the explosive ending of the first movie! His body has been mostly paralyzed but his mind still functions well enough, and now he's in the care of Walker, a computer engineer that needs Jobe's intelligence to help build a new type of super computer chip. Jobe is depressed though, and spends most of his time in virtual reality programs where he can still walk and wear a golden bodysuit all day.
Peter, Jobe's young friend from the first movie, is now a teenager living in the sewers with his friends... Wait, what? It seems like only a few years have passed, but now the normal world of the first movie has become a Blade Runner-style industrial future where kids live in the sewers. It makes no sense!
Anyways, Jobe contacts Peter through VR and asks him to find Dr. Trace, the original designer of the super chip, so that he can help Jobe finish building it.

Walker's plan for the chip is revealed, and of course it's not good. He wants to use it to control the minds of the public, under the guise of connecting the whole world to unlimited information in VR... Or something like that. A lot of the "tech-talk" is just complete nonsense. It's suffice to say that Walker's a bad and greedy man.
Peter and his friends track down Dr. Trace who's living out in the desert like a hippy, and he eventually agrees to get involved because he knows the dangerous potential of the chip. Jobe has also come to realize the power at his disposal, and reveals a maniacal plan to make himself immortal in VR and be the god of every computer of the world! Sure, movie... whatever.

Peter etc.
It becomes a three-way race to see who can control the chip first. Walker wants to enslave the world, Jobe wants be a cyber-space god and enslave the world, and Trace just wants to stop them both. The plot moves fast and there's a fair bit of action (in VR and in the real world) but the movie finds a way to make it muddled and very boring. Just imagine people hacking computers and saying "virtual" and "cyber" every ten seconds, and you've basically seen half of the movie already.

Dr. Trace
Walker

This clearly wasn't planned as a Lawnmower sequel, and the title was just slapped on at the last minute. The virtual reality CGI definitely looks better than the first movie, but it's still low-budget garbage that wouldn't impress anyone in 1996. Pretty much the only thing that kept me entertained was laughing at the bad acting and the bizarre cyber-space scenes. Matt Frewer's performance as Jobe is quite peculiar, but it feels too much like Jim Carrey's ridiculous Riddler from Batman Forever. He's super exaggerated and nothing like the earlier Jobe, but it does add some flair to an otherwise dry 90 minutes.

????????

I think that's it for Stephen King related movies this month. I was pleasantly surprised to find that many of the ill reputed movies are quite fun. (Who knew The Mangler was going to be awesome!?) I think it's when you get into sequel territory that things get truly bad.

Be sure not to miss:
- The smart dog was pretty cool, too bad he didn't get more to do.
- Frewer has played a VR creation before: Max Headroom! And now that I think about it, this would make more sense as an evil Headroom story than a Lawnmower Man movie.
- Molly Shannon is supposed to be in here somewhere, but I never noticed her.

Should I watch it?
No, despite some laughs it's just too dull and pointless.

The Beach Girls (1982)

"There will never be another party like this one." - Ducky

Three girls experience life at a beach house, and learn that partying can be hard work.
Starring: Debra Blee, Val Kline, Jeana Keough, Adam Roarke, James Daughton

Link to IMDB

Sarah
Sarah and her two best friends, Ginger and Ducky, have been allowed to stay at her uncle's beach house for the summer while he is out of town on business. Ginger and Ducky are wild girls and they quickly start planning a big party, but Sarah is reluctant to have fun and makes them promise to keep the party calm and small. She's reserved and a bit shy, but has also found a new love interest in a hunk named Scott.
Using some of the weirdest invitation tactics I've ever seen, Ginger soon has the house full of guys and gals dancing and drinking, by just calling random repairmen from the phonebook with the hopes that they are cool. And that's the whole movie... Okay, okay, I guess a bit more does happen, but luckily it involves six garbage bags of marijuana!

Ducky and Ginger
While Sarah struggles to enjoy the ever growing party, the neighbours have called her uncle to complain about the noise, so Uncle Carl decides he better head home and check on the situation. Luckily, Uncle Carl is a chill guy, and he calmly explains to Sarah that they can keep partying, but it's the last party and Ginger and Ducky can't stay for the summer.
The next morning, the girls find that a massive amount of "killer weed" has washed up on the beach! This blows everyone's mind and even Sarah and Uncle Carl are getting into the party vibes now, so it looks like this is one beach party that will never end. That is unless the coastguard starts snooping around!

It's not all wild antics and nudity, although the party hijinks are when the movie is playing to its strengths, but it also has a dreamy innocent side, occasionally focusing on Sarah trying to fit in among her peers and find her place in the world. It's not exactly profound but it's nice to see the movie at least attempt some thoughtful moments, and it helps keep the main plot from becoming a farce. The sub-plots, on the other hand, are very silly.

Party aftermath

For a healthy dose of slapstick comedy there's a goofy gardener spying on the girls the whole time, and it eventually builds to a mud wrestling fight scene with a rival chauffeur. It's completely pointless but ten times better than the sub-plot about the coastguard chasing after pirates (that's where the weed came from.)
Besides some clumsy character development for Sarah, the plot is basically just one big party, but thankfully it's a rather enjoyable party with a group of friendly, wild beach kids.

Trucks (1997)

Killer trucks!!
Starring: Timothy Busfield, Brenda Bakke, Jay Brazeau, Aidan Devine

Link to IMDB

Stephen King's Maximum Overdrive is pretty bad, but it's also a great classic B-movie that everyone should see and appreciate. A remake came along 11 years later, so let's take it for a test drive.

Ray, as skeptical about this
remake as everyone else.
Trucks tells the story of trucks. Trucks that have suddenly come to life and go on a homicidal killing spree! Of course it's the human victims that become the focus of the plot, much to my disappointment.
Ray and his son Logan run a service station out in the Nevada countryside, not too far from the infamous Area 51. Ray's friend Hope is a guide for the UFO tourists that pass through the area, and she has a new group arriving today, consisting of an old hippy dude and an ex-military man with his obnoxious daughter. In short, we meet a bunch of people and we don't care about any of them.
There are some angry trucks driving around, taking out the phone lines and running people off the road, but the threat of "killer trucks" takes a while to fully establish itself.
Panic, confusion and uncertainty arise... And that was just my reaction! The characters in the movie fair a bit better, because they're mostly just worrying about their personal problems and family drama. The movie is teasing us with boring truck driving and even more boring humans, where's all the killing and mayhem!?

Finally, after about 40 minutes, everyone gets to Ray's station to try to call for help, but they are soon trapped there as a group of merciless trucks surround them. There are a few scenes showing us what's happening in nearby communities, and this is where the movie really goes wonderfully overboard. You want to see a hazmat suit come alive and kill? You got it! How about a psycho radio controlled truck? Holy shit, yes! These vignettes are masterpieces of absurdity!
Things are heating up at the station, too, as the trucks display their intelligence and that they will kill anyone that gets in their path. Ray, Hope and the rest of the group are going to need to form a plan if they want to attempt fighting back against the trucks!

Abby: "Trucks don't drive themselves, okay!"
Jack: "Maybe it just wanted some company."

Sometimes Trucks is so over-the-top preposterous that I was either laughing my ass off or left speechless in amazement. The directing and editing choices are very peculiar at times, pushing it into a realm of chaos that is much appreciated. But just as often, it's bogged down with human drama that takes itself way too seriously. By the end I decided that the only parts that really made any sense were the parts of complete nonsense! I was then left with the monumental task of trying to wrap my mind around the stunning ending while still chuckling at the sheer audacity of it all.

Overall, Maximum Overdrive remains better, while Trucks is a more dramatic and honest effort at adapting the short story, but still has enough laughs and explosions to keep it trucking along at a fast pace.

Be sure not to miss:
- The guy trapped in the freezer truck never gets out. I kept picturing him just being tossed around in there like a frozen popsicle the whole movie.
- Is the diner's television made of wood? Cardboard?
- This was actually made as a pilot for a TV series! Imagine if that got made!

Yes, worth seeing for the great laughs.

Dead Dudes in the House (1989)

"The old lady hurt me!" - Steve

aka: The House on Tombstone Hill
aka: The Dead Come Home
A group of friends get trapped in a haunted house.
Starring: Mark Zobian, Sarah Newhouse, Victor Verhaeghe, Douglas Gibson

Link to IMDB

When Mark buys a dilapidated house in the country with the intent of renovating it, he takes seven of his friends out there to help him fix-up his new home. After arriving, they find a creepy noose in the yard and an old tombstone, which Bob proceeds to smash with a sledgehammer. (Bob's a real ass.) This awakens an old lady inside the house! Is she a hobo? Is she a ghost? Well, I'm not even sure that she's a lady, because it looks more like a guy with melted cheese all over his face.

Once they get inside everyone has to argue about everything, mostly because Bob enjoys treating his friends like crap. (I hope Bob becomes a dead dude in the house soon.) The old lady is muttering around and the kids assume she's just lost, but we know something spooky is going on when all the doors become permanently locked, trapping everyone inside the house.
It takes awhile for anything to happen, but eventually the old lady kills one of the boys and he becomes a zombie ghoul! The gang is fully terrified now, so they grab their power tools and crowbars to use as weapons against the old lady hiding upstairs.

"Hi Steve. How's the real world, man?" - Zombie Joey

Old Lady
Watching the granny kill off the kids as they ineffectively try to stop her is both funny and just so damn weird! Troma Entertainment didn't make this film, but they did create the offbeat title and distribute it as a comedy, although it's really more of a slasher-zombie hybrid. There are some intentional laughs, because the undead love a cheesy one-liner just like the rest of us, but there's definitely more of a horror vibe created as the sinister granny stalks the terrified group.
The twisted killings continue as she gleefully dishes out her own brand of peculiar granny violence, but there's also plenty of very dull sections as the kids just wander around in complete darkness, arguing and trying to find a way to escape out of the house.

Dead dude walking

This is a stupid and predictable movie with some gloriously bad acting and dialog, but the effectiveness of the murky atmosphere and bloody deaths cannot be denied, and those two things keep the tense parts feeling like an eccentric nightmare. It honestly gets pretty creepy! In between the action is when it drags slow, and I was checking how many minutes I had left to endure before the sun came up and I could see who survived the night of granny terror... Bob better damn well not live through this! Someone please make sure that idiot dies!

Be sure not to miss:
- The biggest problem the group faces are doors and windows. There are numerous scenes of them being thwarted by doors and windows again and again.
- The old lady is actually played by a man, and it's pretty easy to tell.

Double Trouble (1992)

"I don't take any steroids, and I don't take any shit!" - David

Twin brothers on opposites sides of the law are forced to work together to stop diamond thieves.
Starring: David Paul, Peter Paul, Roddy McDowall, Bill Mumy

Link to IMDB

Peter Jade is a small time burglar, with a preference for stealing diamonds from high-tech vaults. He's not a bad guy, he just loves the thrill of stealing from big corporations so he can buy himself nice swag. He also does it just to annoy his twin brother, David, who happens to be a hot-headed cop! These two muscle bound bros do not like each other. David despises Peter's criminal life, and when Peter isn't in jail he enjoys driving David mad by outsmarting the police.
There has been a series of mafia related diamond heists in the city, and Peter becomes a target when he inadvertently steals some evidence that belongs to a mafia boss named Chamberlain. Peter then gets busted by the police, but that leads into the main story, which is David's boss assigning Peter to be his new partner. No way!? Yes way!

Peter and David... Or is it David and Peter ?

The evidence that Peter has will be an asset in stopping the mafia, but David is furious that he has to work with his wild thieving brother. Despite the friction between the two, they work together and slowly build trust as they get closer to finding Chamberlain. The movie delivers the fights and action you'd expect in a cop movie, but we also get a lot of really stupid comedy.

Chamberlain

It starts sensible enough, but the movie eventually decides to embrace more immature elements. I was getting some laughs, but it's not exactly great comedy here because it's just too damn stupid, and mostly relies on physical gags and juvenile insults. I guess that's to be expected with a low-budget buddy movie, but some restraint would have helped it be a bit more enjoyable through the second half.
The last act tries to get back to the more serious tone set before, but by then it's all drop-kicks, hamburgers and upside down cars.
Roddy McDowell makes a pretty great villain. He chews the scenery every chance he gets, fitting alongside the more inexperienced actors nicely.

Unfortunately, the movie doesn't live up to its potential, and often devolves into nonsensical ideas with cartoon music being played instead of delivering the crime plot. Oh god, the music! At first the silly music is a treat, with it's classic late 80's action synths and swanky guitars laying the cheese on thick, but halfway through it becomes an obnoxious crowbar in your ear!
I must be seeing double !
The Paul brothers can be charming and funny at times, so I'll definitely have to find some of their other movies to watch.

Be sure not to miss:
- "The g-forces are killing me!"  Yes, there are some good one-liners to enjoy.
- Peter's funny cat graffiti.
- Nice to see James Doohan with a small role, and David Carradine is here too!
- A sink as a litter box? Madness or genius?

Internet review:

The Night Flier (1997)

"Why do all the weird ones gotta fly at night?" - Airport Guy

A reporter gets on the trail of a vamipric serial killer.
Starring: Miguel Ferrer, Julie Entwisle, Dan Monahan

Link to IMDB

Continuing with the Stephen King movies this month, and this little gem appeared on my radar...

Richard Dees does not give a fuck. He's bitter, miserable and has a bleak outlook on life and the world around him. Pretty much the only thing he cares about is his job as a reporter for an exploitation tabloid paper, the Inside View. He's getting frustrated with his work though, because he has to contend with censorship and dead-end stories about Bigfoot and UFO sightings. When his boss finds a new story about a vampire traveling around in a small Cessna plane and killing people, Richard wants nothing to do with it, so the story is passed to the new reporter, Katherine. She's a bright young lady that's eager to work her first big story, but Richard hates her immediately because he hates everyone.
We see that there really is a serial killer going around to small isolated airports and murdering people, it's mysterious and bloody but the man's identity is kept hidden in the shadows of his cape.
As the killings continue, Richard realizes the story is worth pursuing, so he gets in his own Cessna plane and flies out to investigate the crime scenes and possible witnesses. Katherine doesn't give up easily and she eventually pursues the story too, much to Richard's annoyance.

Katherine
Everyone that Richard interviews seems to have trouble remembering the specifics about the mysterious pilot, giving us the impression that the killer can influence people so that he's forgotten as easily as a fleeting dream. The more Richard learns the more it seems that the killer might actually be a real paranormal vampire! He receives bloody warnings to cease his investigations, but Richard's becoming obsessed with the story as he tries to get inside the mind of the killer and solve what he's all about.
The plot is simple and has a slow pace but it's not dull, as it effectively and steadily builds eerie suspense while Richard follows the evidence. It's also thematically interesting, as we watch this man that shields himself from the misery of the world by making himself equally as horrible.

"A very bad man is coming your way." - Richard

Although we often get to see the killer claim his victims, that's not really what the movie is about. The focus is almost entirely on Richard and his thoughts. He may be a cruel and heartless bastard, but he's a fascinating cruel and heartless bastard. Miguel Ferrer's performance is great here, making the character enjoyable to watch by giving him mystique and complexities.
Richard is a troubled man, and as he gets closer to the killer we learn of his inner turmoil and how his obsession to find the ugly truth drives him to be the relentless and cold person that he is.

Without spoiling anything, the ending is quite intense and satisfying, with the ideas of the movie coming together in a very interesting and shocking way. Will Richard's mad search into the darkness of the world be his undoing? Can he stop the monster he's discovered, or will his own inner demons destroy him first?

Be sure not to miss:
- Some of the tabloid headlines we see reference other King stories.
- Richard gives Katherine the nickname Jimmy Olsen.

Satan's Black Wedding (1975)

"It has to be the work of a madman." - Mark

A man discovers his sister has a crush on Satan.
Starring: Greg Braddock, Lisa Milano, Ray Myles

Link to IMDB

Mark
When Mark gets the news of his estranged sister Nina's suicide, he travels out of town to arrange for her funeral. It seems there's some mystery surrounding her death, since her body was completely drained of blood and the police detectives think she was murdered.
Mark visits his aunt and she explains how Nina was acting strange in the last few weeks of her life, and had become obsessed with a spooky old church that has a history of Satanic cult activities.
Sure enough, some weirdo stuff is definitely going on. Nina's body is being kept by a creepy priest, Father Daken, who has plans to convert her into a vampire so she can do Satan's bidding. Nina's first task will be to kill her entire family!
That all happens in the first 10 minutes!

Mark tries to piece together the mystery of Nina's descent into madness that led to her death, and he goes to investigate the old church that she was visiting. Meanwhile, vampire Nina lurks around in the darkness, killing a few people and just being a ghoul in general. Sometimes nothing happens. Mark stares at the sea. Mark stares at his girlfriend. Mark and his girlfriend stare at each other. Many scenes also take place in complete darkness, so who knows what's going on then, I can't even hear anything over the piano music clanging!
There is some suspenseful atmosphere being built, with Father Daken being a total creep and Nina getting closer to Mark as she haunts him every night.

"This thing confuses me." - Detective Scott

Father Daken
Nina

Despite the small plot wandering around aimlessly (in the dark of course) it's only an hour long, so it goes by pretty quick. The violence is cheap and sloppy, which actually makes it look rather macabre. The movie is borderline awful at times, and yet somehow it actually works way better than it should! Maybe it's the wobbly piano music or the hilariously wooden acting, but there's something oddly compelling here. There are glimpses of twisted originality and the ending is pretty bold, but it's just too awkward to really become the gothic mystery it wants to be.

In the dark, no one can see that we can't act

Be sure not to miss:

A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell (1990)

"Sometimes my juices start to flow and I feel like a nymphoid barbarian in dinosaur hell." - Lea

In a post-apocalyptic world, a young woman has to deal with creeps and dinosaurs.
Starring: Linda Corwin, Paul Guzzi, Alex Pirnie

Link to IMDB

Our heroine, Lea, opens the movie with narration, explaining that it's been about 20 years since a nuclear war ended the world, and in that time civilization has been completely erased and the few humans that are left live in a medieval world. Radiation has mutated all of the wildlife into giant dinosaur creatures that roam the wilderness... All that happened in only 20 years!? Damn, that is some impressive apocalypse action.
Lea has survived by learning to fight, but she sure would like to find a boyfriend because even a barbarian girl has sexual needs. She's soon in luck when she makes friends with Marn, a studly man that helps her beat-up a band of attacking rapists, and they choose to travel together.

I quickly noticed something odd here... There's barely any dialog. All speaking is kept to a bare minimum, except for a few scenes in the middle. It does make the beginning half drag, because instead of talking they just do a lot of walking.

It's not long before their pleasant adventure is interrupted by a Bad Guy and his frog-men goons. Marn is beaten and left for dead, while Lea is hauled away by the Bad Guy. Marn is found by Old Man (that's seriously what he calls himself) and nurses Marn back to health. Finally, we get an actual conversation, because Old Man loves to talk. When Marn has recuperated and feels ready to rescue Lea, Old Man gives him a powerful weapon from the past, called a gun.
The second half is much more exciting, with lots of monsters and sloppy fights, but there's not much plot except for typical adventuring, so let's just talk about the awesome dinosaurs!

Marn
Bad Guy

The effects are classic stop-motion animation, and are honestly quite impressive for such a small budget. The monsters all look great, and the actors even directly get to interact with them. Even though the plot moves quite slow, there's a new dinosaur to see every 10 minutes and always something to laugh at.
The movie's a lot more innocent than the title implies. There's no sex and only some brief nudity, but it  delivers everything else in the title. Plenty of dinos and barbaric action!

Be sure not to miss:
- Old Man is reciting the poem Jabberwocky.
- The music is ridiculous. Often it's just someone banging on an old air organ, or we're treated to really loud flute solos.
- I think the opening scenes are from Troma's War, which I really need to watch soon.
