Black Shampoo (1976)

"Your hair looks like shit." - Mr. Jonathan

A tough hairdresser protects his friends from trouble.
Starring: John Daniels, Tanya Boyd, Joseph Carlo, Skip E. Lowe

Link to IMDB

Meet Mr. Jonathan. He's a fashionable stud and also the best hairdresser on Sunset Drive. All the ladies in town adore him, so when Jonathan's not busy watching over his flamboyant employees in the little salon, he's having private romantic sessions with the female clientele.
After he hires Brenda as the new receptionist, three shady men that work for her old boss, Mr. Wilson, start harassing her. Seems like Brenda got entangled with the mafia, but now she wants to be free of her old life with Mr. Wilson.
Jonathan and Brenda begin to get romantic and he promises to protect her, but while they're out for dinner Wilson's goons trash the salon! Jonathan's enraged and Brenda is terrified, so they make love, of course. He's in for a surprise though, when he finds that Brenda has disappeared the next morning.
Meeting face to face with Mr. Wilson, Jonathan sees that Brenda is living with him. Confused, annoyed and heart broken, he decides to put it all behind him. Things were easier when all he had to worry about was shampoo and sexy times.

Brenda
Jonathan goes to the country for a little vacation, relaxing at a cabin he owns. It seems that Brenda has been working on a plan that will change her life, and she follows Jonathan out into the woods to get his help again. She's unaware that Wilson and the dangerous goons are right behind her, and they're definitely not interested in getting a haircut!

Black Shampoo is an odd blaxploitation film, because I can't tell if it is aware of its own ridiculousness. The main characters almost have a serious story going on, but everything around them is a raunchy comedy of the 70's. It's a weird balance of romance and eccentric goofiness, with just enough trashy exploitation thrown in to keep it saucy.

The clumsy acting and love story add some charm and there's laughs to find, but there's barely any violence until the end. The last 20 minutes do get darker and violent, especially when Jonathan pulls out a chainsaw, hatchet and other random weapons to take on the thugs. Overall, much of the movie is very chill and relaxing, with random scenes to add jokes and/or nudity. Jonathan is a suitable hero and the movie tries to have some fun, so it remained a treat to watch.

Mr. Wilson's about to do something awful !

The Redeemer: Son of Satan (1978)

"This is insane." - Roger

aka: The Redeemer
aka: Class Reunion Massacre
A highschool reunion is terrorized by a mysterious killer.
Starring: Damien Knight, Jeannetta Arnette, Nick Carter, Nikki Barthen

Link to IMDB

Priest and Lake Boy
The movie opens with chilling music as a spooky boy rises from a lake, he then walks into town to give a third thumb to a man that may or may not also be the local priest. Either way, the three-thumbed man murders the caretaker of an old nearby school. The beginning is really surreal, feeling like a David Lynch film that's been lost in time. Lake Boy listens as the priest sermonizes about sin and redemption, which segues into the main story...

We're given a glimpse into the sinful lives of six people that are receiving invitations to their highschool reunion. Their sins are pretty tame stuff, like drinking too much, ignoring their family, and one guy is guilty for just liking hamburgers a lot. When they arrive at the school for the reunion, they soon realize that no one else was invited and that they've been locked inside the building without any way to communicate to the outside world!

The fear really sets in when they find the corpse of the caretaker and realize a masked man is hiding in the school with them, planning to kill them off one by one! The killer wears many disguises; a clown, a grim reaper, and even a good Burton Cummings impersonation. He's actually pretty creepy as he rants and stalks after his victims. But who is this madman, and what does he want with these six average people? The ending gets just as unusual as the beginning, but maybe Lake Boy will have some answers... Maybe.

The reunion's last supper

Strangeness prevails in this atmospheric movie. It holds together as an effectively eerie thriller that feels unique, and although the characters are clichés the actors do a pretty good job. There's not a lot of blood, but still violent enough for some memorable deaths. The killer's insanity and over-acting add some humour, as does the usual cheesiness provided by a low budget movie, but it doesn't detract from the palpable feeling of doom.
The main plot is paired with the bizarre opening and closing scenes, which adds to the enjoyable confusion of wondering what is going on. If you pay attention to some clues (and make a few leaps of logic,) the "what" of everything is explained, but the "why" is left ambiguous enough to have me admire the attempt at mystery.
This was an enjoyable trip into the outskirts of genre cinema from the 70s. Unconventional and unpredictable, it really is a hidden gem that somehow exceeds the sum of its parts.

Tomboy (1985)

A girl learns about love, life and rocket powered race cars.
Starring: Betsy Russell, Gerard Christopher, Kristi Somers, Eric Douglas

Link to IMDB

Tomasina "Tommy" Boyd has always been a tomboy. She grew up playing sports with the guys, and now works as a mechanic so that she can focus on her passion for race car driving and motorcycles. An opening montage establishes just how cool Tommy is. She zooms around on her motorbike, shoots hoops with the boys, and sometimes even does both at the same time! Yes, she is that cool!
(Insert celebratory slow motion high-five here.)

Tommy works at Chester's Garage, where she's respected as one of the top mechanics in town. Her best friend is the bubbly Seville, who is trying to follow her dream of getting into showbiz. Both of the girls seem to be at a crossroads in life, trying to decide where their futures are going to lead.
One of Tommy's most important customers is a rich brat named Ernie, he seems like a real ass but Tommy stays on his good side because he's involved with professional racing. This leads to Tommy meeting Randy Starr, a pro race car driver that she has a huge crush on.

Tommy and Randy instantly like each other and begin spending time together. This, of course, leads to one of the many montages of the movie. There's at least seven or eight montages, and they all involve something magical about the 1980s. Miniature golf, water slides and aerobics are all covered. Since the plot is already stretched thin, they at least create the illusion that something is happening.
Anyways, when Tommy starts to realize that Randy is a jerk she chooses self-respect over love, and decides to prove that she's just as good of a driver as he is. A competitive race is planned between the ex-lovers, but no one believes that Tommy can beat a pro in her homemade rocket-powered race car.

"Tommy's a strange name for a girl, but you don't drive like a girl, do you?" - Earl

Ernie and Randy

Seville
This is a sufficiently made movie, except for the very clumsy way the almost non-existent story is handled. There are many plot elements introduced that are never mentioned again, which seems like wasted potential because they're often the most entertaining pieces. These fun ideas could have helped make a more interesting screenplay, but instead we get about 40 minutes of montage scenes.

It's slightly less smutty than most Crown International pictures, which fits alongside the glimmers of maturity that the themes are trying to convey.
The best aspect is definitely the charismatic Betsy Russell as Tommy. She's instantly likeable and I was rooting for her to succeed the whole time.
The movie has good intentions but no idea how to execute them, creating an awkward message of female empowerment and a few laughs.

Be sure not to miss:
- The doughnut bra.
- Harold's hitchhiking scene is really odd.

The Exterminator (1980)

"It didn't matter if it was right or wrong, I just did it." - John

A man deals out vengeance in the crime ridden streets of New York.
Starring: Robert Ginty, Christopher George, Steve James, Samantha Eggar

Link to IMDB

After barely surviving the horrors of the Vietnam war, John Eastland is back in New York, working as a laborer on the docks with his friend Michael. There's a lot of crime in the city, as the mobsters and ghetto ghouls are always pushing people around and causing trouble. After Michael is beaten by thugs so badly that he's left paralyzed, John decides he wants revenge on the men responsible. Armed with a big gun, John finds them and delivers his payback, but this is just the beginning of his plan.

Dalton
It's made clear that John doesn't enjoy killing and that he's suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder caused by the war, but he's compelled to clean-up the streets and deliver justice by any means necessary.
Detective Dalton is on the case of all this violence, he's a hard-headed cop that is not impressed with having a deadly vigilante in his town, but the clues are leading him closer to John.
Calling himself The Exterminator, John sends a message to the media, claiming that he's here to defend the innocent and rid the city of thugs, mobsters and crooked politicians.
Will John go too far before he can be stopped, or will he become the hero of retribution that the city needs?

Although it has a pretty thin plot, the movie remains a decent, well directed thriller. Violent, grim and occasionally ludicrous, it works well as an exploitation revenge story. There's also some real heart here, as it creates a sympathetic view of a common man trying to cope with the turmoil of PTSD in a society that is destroying itself.

Something awful is about to happen.

Similarities to Death Wish can be made, but The Exterminator has more introspective social commentary, and John feels like an unstable anti-hero being pushed over the edge instead of a calm bad ass like Charles Bronson.
It's a brutal movie, and yet surprisingly has a glimmer of hope underneath the ugliness. If you think you've seen it all but haven't watched this yet, then you might be pleasantly surprised.

Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance (2015)

"It's nice to see an old friend after all these years." - Joe

Joe and Frank reunite to stop deadly assassins.
Starring: Mathew Karedas, Mark Frazer, Kayden Kross, Bai Ling, and Tommy Wiseau

Link to IMDB

The original Samurai Cop will always be a true classic of B-movies, and 25 years later a sequel has been made. This is a pretty big deal, so I was really excited to sit down and watch this.

Joe
Two yakuza crime organizations are at war with each other, and they fear no law except the legend of Joe Marshal. But our hero from the first movie has left law enforcement behind, and has disappeared into seclusion after his wife was killed. His old partner, Detective Frank Washington, is still working on the impossible task of stopping gang violence.

It's not long before Frank locates Joe and asks him to come back to the force and help stop the ninja gangs, but Joe has sworn to never use violence again and has retired his sword and badge. Two minutes later, they are attacked by ninjas and Joe changes his mind! The gangs might have a connection to the murder of his wife, so Joe and Frank team-up once again to kick some ass!

Joe officially reclaims his badge and he also meets a new love interest, the mysterious Milena. The movie begins to reveal its true nature now, and with it my soul is crushed by a massive disappointment.

Large portions of the movie fall into that phenomenon which can only be described as "stuff is happening." So yeah, stuff happens for awhile and most of it just pointless. I can deal with minimal plot, but just staring at stuff gets tiresome.
Even the gunfights and ninja action is boring as hell. It's all stylistically awful looking and there's very little fun involved. There's an abundant use of CGI everywhere. Blood, bullets and often the backgrounds are all created with the cheapest digital effects. The movie is ugly to look at, and the music is even worse! These cheap imitation songs were probably purchased in bulk for $5.

Frank
Milena

The story mostly goes where expected as Joe pulls out his samurai sword to stop the gangs, but it's all downright clumsy and unnecessarily confusing.
Right from the start I could tell the movie wasn't going to feel or look like anything from the first movie, but once the action starts it becomes completely disconnected from Samurai Cop. It fails tremendously as a sequel, but how does it stand as its own movie? Not very well. It feels like an absurd accident created in an insincere vacuum. If not for Joe and Frank, I likely would have lost interest. The moments that work here are few and far between.

"I'm getting too old for this." - Frank

Alright, so what did I enjoy here? It truly was nice to see Joe and Frank again. The actors still have the same chemistry and fit into their roles perfectly. Joe's return out of retirement to become a deadly force was fun, but the movie doesn't focus on that enough.
Although there are call backs to the first movie, the writers wisely avoid recreating the same jokes. (There's no silly wig, for example.) But in hindsight, maybe they should have tried to capture some of the same magic, instead of trying to dazzle old-school fans with CGI and porn star tits.

That's the idiot Tommy Wiseau, as one of the main villains. Wiseau is only here as a novelty, and since he refused to read from the script or take direction his performance is annoyingly infantile.

Listening to interviews with Mathew Karedas (Joe) it is clear that the movie did not turn out how he had hoped and he had no creative input. Keep in mind that the director/writer of the original movie, Amir Shervan, died years ago, and the sequel exists solely on the support of a Kickstarter project.
This movie does try, but the lack of a cohesive vision brings a painful artificiality to every aspect.

Be sure not to miss:
- The silly lion head from the first movie makes a few cameos in the background.
- Kale chips.
- Some original characters make cameos, but there's also some B-movie notables added to the cast, like Laurene Landon, Kristine DeBell and Mel Novak. But most importantly, the great Joe Estevez plays the angry police chief.

Surfing the Ham Channel #7

Tonight, Surfing the Ham Channel presents a very special installment...

Enlighten yourself with an educational film on using dangerous heavy equipment, as we Shake Hands with Danger. (1980)

Be sure to catch this evening's cautionary reminder on how to navigate the world of construction without getting the blues.
Narrated by guitar-strumming balladeer Three-Finger Joe, we hear some heavy truths on how danger is everywhere and we must educate ourselves accordingly. No matter if you're an "old timer" or a "greenhorn," shortcuts to safety will only invite injury.
Body and mind must work as one if you want to avoid catastrophe, and you'll see these men turn the common workplace into a gruesome abattoir when they fail to respect the tools that they're using!
You'll surely feel ready for the construction yard after knowing the facts, but I suggest you heed Joe's powerful (and tuneful) advice!

Stay tuned for!

Robowar (1988)

"I've seen some heavy greens in my time, but this takes the cake." - Peel

aka: Robot da Guerra
Soldiers hunt a killer cyborg through the jungle.
Starring: Reb Brown, Catherine Hickland, Mel Davidson, Romano Puppo, Jim Gaines

Link to IMDB

Murphy
The movie begins with the U.S. military losing control of a weapon called Omega One that has malfunctioned and is destroying everything in its path as it plows through the jungle! Unsuccessful in their attempts to stop Omega One, the army decides it's time to call in a deadly team of anti-guerilla experts that always take the most dangerous jobs.

The team is led by Major Murphy 'Killzone' Black, and they call themselves B.A.M. Which stands for Big Ass Motherfuckers! (I guess Bad was already taken by another team.)
An army official named Mascher is to be their advisor on the mission, but he's actually going along to make sure Omega One is dealt with correctly. It turns out that Omega is a top secret experimental cyborg that has gone rogue, but Mascher doesn't tell the B.A.M. team any of that info, so Murphy thinks it's a routine mission to kill some bad guys in an unspecified war.

As the team heads into the jungle they soon start finding mutilated and melted bodies. Tension among the men is rising as they realize their target is something they've never encountered before and it's hunting them, but Mascher still keeps the truth a secret.
The team is also fighting guerilla soldiers, so there's plenty of gunfire and explosions. Along the way they rescue a U.N. lady named Virginia, who is pretty tough herself. Once Omega starts killing off Murphy's men, Mascher has to reveal what he knows so that they can prepare a way to fight back, but will the expertise of B.A.M. be enough to stop a killing machine!?

Go team BAM !

"Moving target [garbled bleep bloops] Greasy [bleep bloop] Greasy, greasy." - Omega

There's no way to hide the fact that this is a Predator knockoff, but the characters and dialog here have enough personality to keep it funny and fresh. Much of the movie is exactly what you'd expect: Men yelling and machine guns firing. We also get to see (and hear) plenty of the cyborg, as he literally bleep-bloops his way through the jungle, blasting everyone with a laser gun.
A surprising reveal near the end adds a nice twist to the story, when the origins of Omega are explained and Murphy is forced to confront the cyborg face to face.
I must mention the music, too. It's the cheesiest 80's power-synth-rock you could ever hope to hear. It keeps the energy up when nothing is exploding, and adds to the charm of this low budget rumble in the jungle.

Be sure not to miss:
- Most of what Omega says is just garbled computer noises, but you'll constantly hear it say the word "greasy" quite clearly.
- How does one acquire the nickname Diddy-Bop?

2019: After the Fall of New York (1983)

"What's the matter, you've never seen rats having lunch before?" - Big Ape

A man must rescue survivors from a post-apocalyptic New York.
Starring: Michael Sopkiw, Valentine Monnier, George Eastman, Romano Puppo

Link to IMDB

Parsifal, more than just
a great name.
It's been twenty years since a nuclear holocaust reduced much of Earth to a radioactive wasteland. Life struggles everywhere, and not one human child has been born since the war. The military force of the EURAC group want to control as much of the population as possible in hopes of finding a cure to humanity's infertility. The EURACs might have noble intentions but they have become cruel fascists.

Out in the Nevada desert, where survivors entertain themselves with car battles and gladiator duels, we meet Parsifal, a badass that has survived by looking out for no one except himself. He used to be a soldier in the war against the EURACs, and now his old boss has returned to get Parsifal involved in one more mission to save Earth.
The plan is to rescue a supposedly fertile woman from New York city, where the EURACs have their headquarters. Parsifal has no choice but to accept the mission, so he and two other soldiers, Bronx and Ratchet, head into the dangerous ruins of N.Y.

Does an anti-hero rescuing someone important from a New York wasteland sound familiar? The opening premise might be a copycat, but I was happy to find that this movie actually has a lot of other ideas and really becomes its own crazy adventure.

Arriving in New York through the sewers, the guys are soon fighting gangs of crazy hobos and other such freaks. They team-up with a helpful little man named Shorty and also the beautiful Giara, who may or may not be the woman vital to humanity's survival. The EURAC soldiers are hunting them through the city, but our hero finds even more unlikely help from a mutant ape-man named Big Ape.
Parsifal might be surviving New York better than he hoped, but he's going to quickly discover that getting into all this trouble is much simpler than getting out!

"If love had any meaning in this world, you'd be the one I love." - Parsifal

Giara and Ratchet
Big Ape

It's pretty much non-stop action and intrigue for this movie! With lots of good characters, laughs, and a surprisingly deeper story than expected, it all kept me excited for what might come next. Although this Italian production borrows ideas from many sources (Escape from New York, Planet of the Apes, and Mad Max) it's all mixed together well and serves the story instead of feeling forced.
The movie even touches on themes of morality during wartime, drawing comparisons to historical events. It doesn't overshadow the fun, but the thoughtfulness is a nice touch among all the fistfights and melodrama.

EURAC soldiers
This is a great example of what a quality B-movie should be about. Cheesy and outrageous, but delivered with honesty. It seems to have been aided by a decent budget too, as the costumes, special effects and music all create a fantastic world that I'd like to visit again in the future... Luckily, 2019 is only three years away!

Be sure not to miss:

Rocktober Blood (1984)

"I want your hot, steaming pussy blood all over my face!" - Billy

A crazed rock singer returns from the dead to murder members of his former band.
Starring: Donna Scoggins, Tray Loren, Renee Hubbard, Cana Cockrell

Link to IMDB

Billy
Billy Harper is the singer in a popular rock band, but one night he snaps and begins killing the engineer and producers at the studio! His band mate Lynn barely escapes with her with life, as the police arrive to stop Billy.
With the most awkward time jump ever it is now two years later and Billy has been executed for the murders, leaving Lynn as the leader of his old band.

Lynn's busy preparing for a big Rocktober tour, but she's terrified when Billy mysteriously appears backstage to scare her! He begins to haunt her everywhere she goes, like some spooky stalker. No one believes Lynn when she tries to explain that Billy is back, but she's convinced he's returned from the grave to kill her.

Lynn
It seems that Lynn's fears have some validity to them, as Billy truly has come back and he eventually starts killing Lynn's friends! Some suspense is being built on the exact nature of Billy's return, but everything is moving along real slow. Most of the movie is variations of Lynn getting chased through the dark, and her friends just assuming she's gone crazy.
Security is doubled for the big concert, but Billy still appears and he and Lynn confront each other on stage while the band rocks out. There's a plot twist that actually surprised me because it was not the one I was expecting.
That aside, this movie has the worst ending because it literally stops right in the middle of a scene. Freeze frame! Roll credits! Throw T.V. out window!

This is a prime example of inept filmmakers ruining an idea that seems foolproof. There's hardly any killings and just slightly more rock n' roll, so the two main concepts feel deflated. It also takes itself much too seriously when it clearly should be full blown camp. Many scenes consist of Lynn walking around in the dark or having bubble baths. Sometimes Billy is lurking around, but more often than not he is absent from much of the movie.

While the murders feels rather uninspired, the cheesy acting and a few fun moments when humour sneaks into the picture kept me interested enough.
The soundtrack and live music is performed by Sorcery, and the rockin' tunes are easily the most note worthy aspect of the entire production.

Theater of Blood (1973)

"You thought me slain? Lionheart is immortal!" - Lioneheart

An actor takes revenge against the critics that have mocked him.
Starring: Vincent Price, Diana Rigg, Ian Hendry, Milo O'Shea

Link to IMDB

Lionheart
The city of London is shocked when a popular theater critic is found violently murdered, but they would be even more shocked if they knew who the killer was. Edward Lionheart (Price) used to be the busiest stage actor in London, always getting the lead roles in Shakespearean productions, but despite his work the critics always hated him. Lionheart is now presumed dead after he attempted suicide a year earlier, but he's actually been hiding in an abandoned theater, living with hobos and planning his murderous revenge against the people he thinks ruined his life.
Inspector Boot is investigating the critic's death, and he warns all of the Critic Circle to be on high alert for anyone dangerous. One critic, Mr. Devlin, begins to suspect that perhaps Lionheart is responsible but no one believes him. Even Lionheart's daughter, Edwina, gets unwillingly pulled into the story, and she's appalled that Devlin can't let her dead father rest.
Being a master of disguises, Lionheart always finds a way to lure his targets to their doom and so the body count keeps rising. He isn't content with simple murder though, instead each death is an elaborate production inspired by the violence in Shakespeare's plays.

"You begin to resent an actor if you always have to give him bad notices." - Devlin

To no ones surprise, Vincent Price is excellent and electrifying. Not only does he get to play a tragic killer, he also has plenty of eloquent and macabre monologues to deliver. The movie also has a dark sense of humour, which fits perfectly alongside Price's eerie and melodramatic wit.
Unfortunately, the plot doesn't do much for the first half and it can get dull. People are often being killed, yes, but some of the scenes of Lionheart ranting are drawn out for an extended time. It's hard to complain when it's Vincent Price on screen, but it often brings the story to a standstill.

Inspector Boot and Devlin

The second half advances the plot as Devlin gets proof that Lionheart is alive, and the police begin their hunt for him. Lionheart is always one step ahead though, and with help from a mysterious partner he has planned his revenge to be a long game.
Gruesome, absurd and intelligent, this thriller has a bit of everything and it's all done with style. It's not exceptionally gory but the killings still have a great amount of detail and blood. Even though it can get a bit long-winded at times, it remains a classic example of traditional horror and twisted humour delivered correctly.

Be sure not to miss:
- Your only chance to see Vincent Price portray an afro-adorned gay hairdresser! Most of the costumes and disguises he wears are quite fun.
