Christmas Evil (1980)

"Avoid anyone dressed as Santa Clause." - News Reporter

aka: You Better Watch Out
A weird guy wants to be Santa, but his mind is going to snap!
Starring: Brandon Maggart, Jeffrey DeMunn, Joe Jamrog, Dianne Hull

Link to IMDB

As a young boy, Harry was very upset when he learned that Santa wasn't real, especially under the circumstance of seeing Santa (his father) getting sexy with his mom.
Now a grown man, Harry is still haunted by that disturbing event of his childhood, but he doesn't let it ruin Christmas for him. In fact, he is incredibly passionate about the holidays and even pretends that he is Santa Clause. He spies on the children in his neighborhood, keeping track of who's been naughty or nice.
And yes, it is as creepy as it sounds, but also oddly amusing.

Harry enjoys working at a toy factory, but his coworkers treat him horribly and we come to see that he has no friends. His brother tries to help him, but Harry rather spend time alone.

Harry is definitely a very strange man, but it's easy to sympathize with him. His infatuation with Santa might be disturbing, but he really just wants to keep the magic of Christmas alive.
But when Harry sees that his coworkers are minimizing the importance of Christmas, he decides to steal a truck load of toys from the factory and deliver gifts to all the hospitals in the city.

Santa's got a knife !

He gets so consumed with being Santa that he starts to lose touch with reality. When a group of adults make fun of him, he snaps and attacks them with an axe, killing three people! Now the police have a city wide manhunt for Santa, but will Harry continue spreading joy, or will he go full psycho!? Harry wonders if he can do both!

This happens
Wow, what a curious movie this is. Despite the killing spree, this really doesn't fit into the slasher genre because it is much more of a character study about a troubled man's descent into a dangerous fantasy. Harry is never portrayed as a monster, instead he's a very sad and wounded guy, just trying to find some peace of mind.

"If your name's in the 'Bad Boys & Girls' book, I'll bring you something... horrible." - Harry

Although the atmosphere is rather bleak, there's still room for some dark humour because everything is presented in a peculiar, almost dreamlike state. This allows the film to be rather eccentric without losing the sense of doom hanging over Harry's head.

It does move quite slow with a minimal amount of plot, but it consistently remains interesting, and Brandon Maggart's quirky performance was enough to have me hooked.
There's more going on here than what appears at first glance, and the bizarre ending (which is open to interpretation) is proof that you'll never see another holiday movie with this same demented rendition of heartwarming homicide.

Surfing the Ham Channel #11

Tonight, Surfing the Ham Channel presents a very special installment...

Enjoy 16 minutes of the darkest Christmas humour you can imagine, with Treevenge.

"What did we do to deserve this?" - Tree

From the point of view of the common pine tree, the seemingly tranquil tradition of getting a Christmas tree is actually a massacre of innocent plant lives! Bear witness to their fear, confusion and heartbreak as drooling madmen with axes and chainsaws tear the forest asunder.

After being dragged into the human's homes, the trees are disgraced and tortured even further when they are forced to wear horrible ornaments.
But it's the humans that will face the real nightmare this Christmas, because the trees have had enough abuse and are going to fight back against their oppressors!
It becomes a truly hilarious gorefest as the killer trees exact their revenge, ensuring that every human has a very blood-soaked holiday.

Stay tuned for!

To All a Goodnight (1980)

"It sure doesn't feel like Christmas." - Nancy

A serial killer terrorizes teens over the holidays.
Starring: Jennifer Runyon, Forrest Swanson, Judith Bridges, Linda Gentile, William Lauer

Link to IMDB

Nancy
It's Christmas time at the Calvin Finishing School for Girls, so most of the students and faculty are going home for the holidays. The headmistress, Mrs. Jensen, is staying to keep an eye on the young ladies that didn't go home. Most of these girls are excited to party with a group of boys that will be visiting, but not Nancy. She's our main character but she's innocent, shy and not interested in drinking with guys.

What no one realizes is that there's a serial killer nearby, and two students have already been murdered! The killer eventually wears a Santa Clause mask and outfit and begins lurking around the campus, spying on everyone.

The movie does a really poor job of establishing the characters, but we spend a lot of time with the saucy Leah, the jock T.J., and the nerdy Alex who befriends Nancy.

A handful of other characters are here, which gives us many choices for which one might be the killer, but they also provide many victims for the psycho Santa to pick from. The kids are having a good time drinking, but the killer is always nearby, ready to strike again.

      Alex                                      Leah                         Mrs. Jensen

Eventually, Mrs. Jensen realizes that her students are going missing, so they get Detective Polanksy on the scene to investigate. The cops don't provide much help, but the last 20 minutes of the movie is where the excitement really gets going. Nancy and Alex are trying to uncover the killer's motives and stay alive, while the killer is intent on making sure no one survives the night!

"Everyone's running around like they got the heebee jeebees." - T.J.

Santa's got a stick !

The movie is trying to be dark and serious, but it never really captures the right vibes. It's all too poorly put together to really be an effective thriller, and it's definitely not as creepy as it wants to be. I just couldn't take it seriously, especially because of the unintentional humour caused by the peculiar displays of "acting" and the consistently awkward attempts at trying to inject romance into the story.

For a movie that calls itself a slasher, there's barely any gore or violence and even the twist ending was a bit predictable. Overall, it's far from a failure and was completely watchable, but there's nothing original or interesting enough to make it stand-out as special.

Be sure not to miss:
- Nothing like a hot meal to forget about all that pesky murder.
- "Thank god for airplanes!"
- This movie has some of the worst day-for-night I have ever seen! Sometimes it's broad daylight, but they're using flashlights anyways. This is made even more bizarre by the fact that some scenes are so damn dark you can't see anything!

Breaking All the Rules (1985)

"Alright, I admit it. I'm a pig." - Jack

Four teenagers try to find love and excitement at the carnival.
Starring: Carolyn Dunn, Carl Marotte, Thor Bishopric, Rachael Hayward, Michael Rudder

Link to IMDB

It's the last day of summer and all the teenagers are heading to the carnival to have some fun. Jack and David are two guys desperate to find sex; and while Jack is full of confidence, David is a sad sack.
Next we meet Debbie, a rich girl who is sick of being treated like a princess, so she gives herself a punk make-over. Her and her best friend Debbie are also heading to the carnival.
The four kids meet and sparks begin to fly between them, but don't forget about the three bumbling jewel thieves that are lurking around... Wait, what!?

Jack                                     David
The four kids start hanging-out, and after wasting 20 minutes being confused about should hook-up with who, Jack and Debbie star getting hot while David and Angie begin to connect. A whole lot of nothing happens as they ride roller coasters and dry hump in the park.
After about an hour, Debbie wins a stuffed toy that those jewel thieves hid their diamond in, so now the idiotic trio of thieves begin hunting the kids down to get their treasure back... It's really dumb.

Debbie                                Angie
This movie is one chaotic mess. The story of the four kids isn't too terrible, besides the fact that instead of a plot there's just "stuff happening," but what makes it worse is how much of a loathsome ass Jack can be.
The entire sub-plot with the thieves is painfully bad. They are played like complete idiots, which is supposed to be funny, but instead they just come across as completely annoying.

The thieves
As a coming-of-age story about teenage love it's not a complete failure, and even Jack learns how to be a better person. All of the usual teenager clumsiness is here, and the kids feel realistic and down to earth. But since the only concrete plot revolves around the thieves disrupting their fun, it was hard for me to care about the attempts at sincerity.

"Can I lick your tonsils?" - David

Despite plenty of nudity the movie is not very sleazy, instead keeping a lighthearted and humorous tone.
It rides the line of being too saccharine to be filthy, and too naughty to be family friendly. In other words, there's wasted potential all over the place.
It was okay for a one time watch, but still far from a classic of the genre.

Scared to Death: Syngenor (1980)

"You know what is, Ted? It's garbage!" - Victor

An ex-cop tries to stop a killer monster.
Starring: John Stinson, Diana Davidson, David Moses, Walker Edmiston, Toni Jannotta

Link to IMDB

Ted is a burnt-out ex-cop that now writes novels to pay his bills, but when his old partner, Detective Lou, starts asking for help on a new case about a psycho killer, Ted refuses to get involved.
Besides, Ted is busy getting romantic with his new lady friend, Jennifer, so say 'hello' to the bothersome romance sub-plot.

We have seen a few glimpses of the killer in action and there's nothing typical about these murders. It seems that a slimy fish-man monster has crawled out of the sewers and it's been chomping people to death!
As the body count continues to rise, Ted finally agrees to help Lou, but he really jumps into action after Jennifer gets attacked and is left in a coma.

No one has realized yet that they're dealing with a monster, but then a scientist named Sherry comes forward with information. She suspects the killer is an escaped creation from the laboratory she used to work for, and now this "synthetic genetic organism" (syngenor for short) has mutated into a savage beast and needs to kill humans to feed!
Ted and Lou think that Sherry's wild story fits the clues they've found, but how are they going to stop this vicious monster!?

 Jennifer                                Det. Lou                             Sherry

This movie really hits that sweet spot of being a mess, but still crafted with love. Pretty much every single aspect of the filmmaking is clumsy and awkward, but it feels like it comes from lack of experience instead of lack of attention to detail. Everyone is trying their best, but no one has any idea what they're doing.

"I'm in contact with Earth... occasionally." - Ted

The biggest problem is the lack of forward momentum in the first half. There are some really slow sections when nothing is happening, and we spend a lot of time in the dark, literally, while the characters try to figure out what is going on. It's a shame they always keep the monster in the shadows, because it does seem to be a pretty impressive costume.

I was able to find some good laughs here, especially with Ted. Sometimes he's a total jerk, but he's also quirky and exaggerated enough to be likeable. Now that I think of it, the entire movie could be described that way; sometimes it feels like an actual movie but there's plenty of accidental nonsense to always keep it slightly bewildering.

Hot Moves (1985)

"Here's to getting laid." - Barry

Four guys try to lose their virginity before summer ends.
Starring: Adam Silbar, Michael Zorek, Jeff Fishman, Johnny Timko, Jill Schoelen

Link to IMDB

Michael, Barry, Joey, and Scotty are not the most popular guys in highschool, but now that summer vacation is here they're eager to have some good times. All desperate to lose their virginity before they have to go back to school, they make a pact to do whatever it takes to find some sex.

Michael is sort-of dating a girl a named Julie Anne, but she's not ready to commit to sex, so this leaves Michael just as desperate as his pals as they begin their hunt for girls on the beaches.
It's not too long before Barry actually finds a chance with a lady, but he totally messes up with his clumsiness, of course, because the movie is diving head first into screwball comedy.

The guys
Julie Anne
Much of the movie follows the formula of the guys almost finding success, but they are always thwarted by bad luck, cooler guys, or their own immature goofiness. They go to parties, spy on nudists, and even attempt to buy a hooker; but no one is getting laid.

The only real narrative is that Michael and Julie Anne are still trying to connect. There's an attempt at some sentimental teen romance here, but it doesn't really work because the rest of the movie is all sloppy nudity and low-brow antics.

One thing that I really noticed was how often the guys are just sitting in diners complaining. No wonder they never get laid, they can't stop eating hamburgers for more than 10 minutes!

Michael: "You're disgusting."
Barry: "Yeah, but I'm also lovable."

Lots of this
There are some choice moments where the movie made my chuckle, but most of the comedy is so predictable that it never worked for me. Although I was surprised to find that the movie isn't as sleazy as I was expecting, because the guys are so gullible and innocent that they don't come across as being creeps or jerks.

I tend to enjoy the brainless teenage-sex-comedy-on-the-beach genre, but my hams just weren't exploding with this one, so it's largely a miss.

Parasite (1982)

"You can't have the girl and the lemons." - Ricus

A scientist has to deal with a deadly parasite outbreak.
Starring: Robert Glaudini, Demi Moore, James Davidson, Luca Bercovici, Tom Villard

Link to IMDB

Paul
This movie has one of the most poorly explained beginnings I've ever seen.
It doesn't tell us that we're in a post-apocalyptic world, and that the guy we're following, Dr. Paul Dean, is a scientist that has escaped from the evil government. That info is slowly explained later, so now with that out of the way let's see what the plot is doing...

Paul is traveling across the country, on the run from his past, and he finds room and board at an old motel where he can set-up a makeshift laboratory to work on scientific tests. Paul uses his science to help him with a major problem; he has a deadly parasite in his chest and he needs to keep it under control so that it doesn't kill him!

There's more trouble coming for Paul, because a ruthless government agent named Wolf is on his trail with the plan to kill him. And to make matters even worse, a local thug named Ricus and his gang of goons are always harassing everyone at the motel. Paul's life really sucks, but he does make friends with a young lady named Patricia.... (yes, that is Demi Moore!)

Patricia                                  Ricus                                   Wolf

So where is this all going? Well, the movie is put together in such a bizarre fashion that it's accidentally bordering on experimental sometimes, so you'll usually be left guessing what could possibly be coming next.
The parasite starts spreading around town, of course, and it's revealed to be a carnivorous worm that could destroy what remains of civilization if Dr. Paul and Patricia can't find a way to stop it.

Something gross is happening !

Like I said, this movie has a very peculiar way of telling the story, to such a degree that it feels like there was a different director for each scene, all possibly working from different drafts of the script. It makes for a very confusing but hilarious viewing experience.

Once the pieces start coming together, the world they've created here is actually rather interesting and there's some real tension. Also notable are the special effects of the parasitic worm in action (by Stan Winston) that really ramp up the bloody craziness.

Overall, this movie is just so damn strange that it needs to be seen to fully get a grasp of what the heck the filmmakers were trying to do. Luckily, there's also a lot of fun to be had along the way.

Be sure not to miss:
- Canned fruit, canned soup, and canned beer sounds pretty good considering it's the apocalypse.
- Cherie Currie has a small role.
- Apparently, lemons are the only thing holding the social fabric together.
- The movie was filmed in 3D, so things often fly at the camera for no reason.

Star Crash (1978)

"This galaxy is wild and hostile." - Stella

A band of space rebels try to save the galaxy from evil.
Starring: Caroline Munro, Marjoe Gotner, David Hasselhoff, Joe Spinell, Robert Tessier

Link to IMDB

Stella and Akton are a pair of space smugglers, always looking for adventure and trying to avoid the space police. When they get busted and sent to space jail, they receive help from the most unlikely of sources. The Emperor of the Galaxy himself offers them a job where their skills can be put to use for good.

It seems that an evil man named Count Zarth is attempting to build a powerful weapon that will let him rule the galaxy, and Stella and Akton are tasked with finding and destroying it before Zarth's evil schemes can come to fruition. The Emperor also wants them to find his son, Simon, who has gone missing in action.

Stella                                      Akton                                   Simon

Stella and Akton begin the adventure of a lifetime, as they travel from planet to planet looking for Zarth's secret weapon. They get help from a robot named Elle, and eventually Simon joins with them, too. Along the way they'll face giant monsters, killer droids, and all sorts of space battles as Count Zarth tries to stop them from destroying his weapon.

   Elle                                  Count Zarth

There's no hiding the fact that is a blatant Star Wars rip off, but when you're having this much fun and laughing your ass off the whole way, who cares!? The plot may not be very original, but despite the cheesy acting and pulp presentation, they really made an attempt to make it all feel epic.

They also had a decent budget to work with, and all of the special effects are pretty good, in a trashy B-movie type of way. It's a constant stream of eye-candy, as our heroes travel through space finding all manner of trouble. It really keeps you guessing what could possibly happen next.

"Circuits don't fail me now. Yeehaw!" - Elle

Killer space robots !
As I mentioned, there's plenty of laughs here, both intentional and unintentional, especially from the robot Elle. He's always nervous and saying silly things with complete sincerity.
As far as Italian made rip-offs go, this is one of the more memorable ones I've ever seen. It's filled with fun energy and sci-fi oddities, making it clear to see why it has gained such a cult following.

Be sure not to miss:

The Dorm that Dripped Blood (1982)

"Phew, what a night." - Cop

aka: Death Dorm
aka: Pranks
A serial killer terrorizes a college campus.
Starring: Joanne Murray, Stephen Sachs, David Snow, Pamela Holland, Dennis Ely, Woody Roll

Link to IMDB

It's Christmas vacation and all the students at a Californian university are heading home for the holidays. All students except four, that is, who are staying on campus to clean-out a condemned dormitory that is ready to be torn down.
Joanne is the lady in charge and she gets help from her three friends, Brian, Craig and Patti. They think the place is completely devoid of people, except for an old janitor, but we know that there is a serial killer lurking in the shadows! The murderer wastes no time, and four people have already been killed within the first 20 minutes. But Joanne and her friends have no idea that they're in danger.

Joanne                              Brian                                     Patti                                     Craig

Weird John
The four students start noticing that there's a prowler on campus, and they get suspicious of a weird student named John who was supposed to be on vacation. He obviously becomes our first suspect, but there are other people introduced who also could be the killer, making us question who is really responsible for the murders.

The suspense and tension increases at a steady rhythm, as the killer claims more victims and we are left in the dark trying to put put the clues together. Once Joanne realizes someone is trying to murder them all, it becomes a terror filled night of survival. Like all good slashers, you'll be finding yourself surprised right to the very end.

This movie is literally a film student thesis project, made from rented equipment while the filmmakers were still in school. But even though they lacked experience, they still managed to make a very competent, memorable and successful slasher movie.

Gettin' drilled
They really were able to do a lot with very little, delivering all the aspects that makes a slasher mystery work. The eerie vibes are bolstered by an excellent music score, and the brutal killings have some impressive and creative gore.

There's not too many laughs here, because instead of campy fun it's a bleak and grim atmosphere, but it works perfectly to establish the serious tone and make the danger feel real.
It's not going to blow your mind with originality, but it's still good enough to be considered a hidden gem and any fans of slashers should see it for themselves.

Sorceress (1982)

Baldar: "Isn't one girl enough for you?"
Erlick: "You forgot, these two are one."

Twin sisters try to stop an evil wizard from killing everyone.
Starring: Leigh Harris, Lynette Harris, Roberto Nelson, Bruno Rey, Roberto Ballesteros

Link to IMDB

I've really been on a winning streak lately!

An evil wizard named Traigon is planning on sacrificing his first born child so that he can gain more dark power, but when he sees that his babies are twin girls, he doesn't know which to kill first.
Luckily for the babies, a powerful monk named Krona steps in and kills Traigon (temporarily) and sends the twins to be raised in secrecy with a peasant family.

Now, twenty years later, the twins Mira and Mara have grown into tough warriors that magically live "as one," but Traigon has also returned and he sends his army to search for his daughters. After the twin's village gets destroyed they take a vow to stop Traigon, so they head-out into the world that they know very little about, seeking vengeance.

Mara and Mira
Along the way they find some helpful companions. There's the viking Baldar, a smug guy named Erlick, and even a weird satyr that I just named Goatman. Their adventure takes them to many new places and they find danger everywhere they go, with Traigon's soldiers always following them.

"Even the gods will do as I command." - Traigon

Baldar                        Erlick                            Goatman                         Traigon

There actually are some unexpected twists along the way, especially once the twins become separated. All of the sword fights, wizardry and monsters you'd expect is here, but there's also an attempt at some intrigue that worked surprisingly well.

The other commodity the movie has is plenty of laughs, both intentional and unintentional. It never takes itself too seriously and there are quite a few jokes made, usually at how clueless Mira and Mara are about how the world works since the were basically home-schooled away from civilization.

This happens

This is one of the very first movies to capitalize on the success of the Conan movie, and they clearly had a decent budget here to make some great costumes, sets and special effects. But it's still very much a B movie, and it thrives on nonsense and chaos instead of worrying about making sense.
Rumour has it that a lot of the chaos can be attributed to the director and producer (Roger Corman) having problems with each other, but at least it guarantees that something bonkers is always happening.

As far as the swords & sorcery genre goes, this is a real wildcard that I consider a must-see, because it's constantly entertaining, bonkers and hilarious.

Pigs (1973)

"They're not pigs, you know... They're dead people." - Miss Macy

aka: Daddy's Deadly Darling
aka: The 13th Pig
A disturbed lady finds a pig farmer with nasty secrets of his own.
Starring: Toni Lawrence, Marc Lawrence, Jesse Vint, Catherine Ross, and some pigs

Link to IMDB

We meet a young lady named Lynn as she travels across the country, seemingly fleeing from something in her past. She arrives at a small diner in the middle of nowhere, and gets room and board in exchange for working as a waitress.

The diner's owner is a strange guy named Zambrini who is currently caught in a dispute with his neighbour, Miss Macy. She claims that Zambrini has been feeding dead people to his pigs, and although we know that is in fact quite true, Sheriff Dan has found no evidence on the matter.

We know why Zambrini is so strange (he sure loves digging up dead bodies to feed to his pigs,) but Lynn remains a mystery. We don't know why she's on the lam, but she's definitely a very troubled person.

Eventually, the extent of Lynn's derangement is revealed when she kills a local man that was trying to seduce her! But Zambrini isn't upset about having a dead body to get rid of, because now his pigs can have some fresh meat to chomp on.
Lynn and Zambrini sort-of develop a curious bond over their dark secret, but Sheriff Dan is beginning to suspect that something fishy is going on at the diner.

  Sheriff  Dan                                Zambrini

This is a very peculiar movie indeed. It walks the line of being a gritty grindhouse flick, while also skillfully made enough to come across as a traditional thriller of the 70's.
The focus is on how Lynn is haunted by her past, instead of the horror of a "pig rampage" that the title might conjure in your imagination, and it explores how Zambrini and his pigs start messing with Lynn's already disturbed mind.

"Everybody's sick. Everybody running away from something." - Zambrini

The plot does move rather slow, but I was never bored. Even the simplest scenes are portrayed with a touch of the bizarre, making all the characters and situations feel as though they exist in a dreamlike trance. Lynn really starts going bonkers, and since her turmoil is always accompanied with the sound of pigs oinking, I called it "going boinkers."

With not much violence or attempt at full-blown horror, it's the weird atmosphere and eccentric characters that make this such an oddly compelling piece of weirdo cinema. It's not for everyone, but I can appreciate why Pigs has earned its cult status.

Be sure not to miss:
