After his father recently committed suicide, Cory has been a troubled young man haunted by disturbing voices and nightmares. This compels him to travel out into the country to investigate his grandparents old farm where they were mysteriously killed many years ago. Cory invites a group of friends to join him, and they all meet at a gas station in the middle of nowhere. I know what you're guessing, and yes, there is a weird old man at the gas station that warns Cory to stay away from the farm. (Dear clichés, I love you.)
The gang goes up to the farm despite the warnings of it being cursed, and they find that the place is mostly just ruins. Everyone can feel an atmosphere of evil, but Cory is determined to find some answers about his family's past. The interior of the house is magically preserved, but when they go inside they realize it's definitely haunted and not too keen on visitors!
Officially freaked out, everyone decides to leave, but the cars won't start and when they attempt to walk home a mysterious fog envelops the group and pushes them back to the farm. With dusk falling they are forced to spend the night in the house. Cory finds his grandmother's diary and it explains how demonic powers had been awakened on the land, but also offers clues on how it might be stopped.
The first half is delivered pretty serious and the spooky vibes are effective, but the dialog and acting is so bad that I was also finding good laughs. When nighttime approaches, the movie switches gears and goes full bonkers. Phantoms and zombies attack, so the gang has to fight back with shotguns and karate kicks, but not all of Cory's friends survive the night. The monster make-up and gore are pretty good for a small budget, and we get to see lots of weirdo shit. (Including ghost boobs.)
Still trapped on the farm, the survivors have to endure another night of zombies while they try to find the source of the demonic powers. Cory has to resort to using black magic powers from his ancestors, but will it be enough to stop the entire might of hell !? The ending gets way crazier than I could have guessed!Borrowing some aspects of Evil Dead and Night of the Demons, the movie delivers a cheesy and slimy combo of eerie camp. There's just enough story to keep it interesting and just enough stupidity to remain funny.
It's not a classic but still a good watch, even if it does get incoherent at times.
Be sure not to miss:
- The magician guy has the best introduction ever! That alone is worth the price of admission.
- The doll is totally random, demented and terrifying... Yet no one seemed bothered by it all.
- Did someone get turned into a chicken?!?
Internet review:
"It's a craptastic classic. Discover it’s magical shiteousness." - scuba.steve
