Shrunken Heads (1994)

"I feel so weird... Tommy, are we dead?"  - Freddie

When three New York kids are murdered, the local Haitian voodoo priest re-animates them as shrunken heads to get their revenge... Say what!?
Starring: Julius Harris, Meg Foster, Rebecca Herbst, A.J. Damato

Tommy, Bill and Freddie are just average young city boys, interested in comic books and candy, but the neighbourhood peace is always getting disrupted by the Viper gang, led by the greasy Vinny. These thugs bully everyone in their path, including Mr. Sumatra, a Haitian man that runs the newspaper stand. Making matters even more complicated is that Tommy's in love with Vinny's girl, Sally. Tommy has had enough of the gang, and with advice from Mr. Sumatra he decides they need to find incriminating evidence that will bring the Vipers down. Things don't go as planned, as Vinny captures the three boys and brings them to his boss, Big Moe. They find a way to escape, so Big Moe decides that Vinny should just kill the kids... And he does!

Yes, that's right. Our three young heroes get murdered 30 minutes into the movie!
No worries though, Mr. Sumatra sneaks into the morgue and saws off the heads of the boys, taking them back to his apartment where he proceeds to do some serious voodoo as he boils them in a cauldron. The heads awaken with special powers, and Mr. Sumatra will guide them so that they can get their revenge.

"As we continue to nurture our hate, the loss of our humanity will quicken evermore." - Bill

After a training montage and a jump ahead one year, the little heads are ready to fly across the city and kill anyone committing a crime. It's completely bonkers seeing this in action, and the movie plays it with a mix of seriousness and total camp. It almost seems like it could be a kid movie, but it's violent and weird (it is rated R.) The silliness keeps piling up, and I was laughing my ass off.

Big Moe

Meg Foster as Big Moe deserves a mention. Like most things in the movie the character is eccentric, and she has a lot of fun playing a sleazy criminal that sometimes wears a moustache.

Despite being an undead shrunken head, Tommy still has a crush on Sally, and when she learns of his fate they have a chance to reconnect... It gets amazingly weird.
The movie starts slow, but once the voodoo occurs it's a non-stop trip of laughs and action.

Be sure not to miss:
- The boy's victims become zombies that compulsively clean up litter. (and shit their pants)
- Bonus scene after the end credits.
- Rebecca Herbst was 18 during filming, but it's weird that they sexualized her because Sally is supposed to only be 14.

Internet review:
"A brilliant and hilariously twisted satire!"  -cre8it8
